Punta Cana, Dominican Republic: Miles of White-Sand Beaches

When Christopher Columbus landed on the Dominican Republic more than five centuries ago, he described it as “a beautiful island paradise.” Punta Cana, located on the island’s easternmost tip, lays legitimate claim to that description. The coast stretches for more than 20 miles and is dotted with coconut palms, chaise lounges, and laid-back bars. Glitzy resorts feature prominently along the shoreline, but Playa El Cortecito, a short drive up the coast, harks back to earlier times. Brightly colored thatched-roof shacks line the beach, and local fishermen bring their boats to shore each afternoon with the day’s catch.

Every room has something broken and they don't do preventative maintenance Nothing but trouble from the moment we got into our room. Air conditioning didn't work, TV broken, sliding door wouldn't close and app for dinner reservations wasn't working. Took 3 days and 2 complaints to the front desk to get someone to fix A/C. Spoke to guest services and she got the manager involved. He offered us a new room and "Privilege upgrade" for our troubles. After being locked out of our room that we needed to get into to pack up and move to the new room (maintenance had to come dismantle door lock and reprogram so we could get in), new room had more problems than the first. most of the upgrades that come with "Privilege" we didn't get and the room we were moved into had less amenities than our first. It was a downgrade rather than an upgrade. They were supposed to plan something for my husbands birthday as part of this "privilege" and all they managed to execute was a banner on our door. The special restaurant for his birthday didn't acknowledge us or his birthday and we left without anything special happening. I have been to several resorts in the Dominican and I would rate this a 1 out of 5 and that is being generous. Do yourself a favour don't waste your money on this resort. The lawns looked nice since they worked on them from morning to night every day and outside of the buildings were getting a fresh coat of paint everyday but they should take some of that budget and work on keeping rooms functioning. This was not the place for rest, relaxation or most of all DESTRESSING - its the total opposite. Many others we talked to there had issues with their rooms and with the app. So if going by looks is your thing and not function Ocean Blue and Sand has got that.

Worst Experience - Not worth the money What was supposed to be a relaxing vacation at Ocean Blue & Sand Beach Resort turned into one of the most disappointing and frustrating trips I’ve ever taken. From the moment we arrived, we encountered poor service, rude staff, cleanliness issues, and an overall lack of professionalism that completely ruined our stay. Our booking specifically requested a king-size bed, but we were given a room with two doubles without any explanation. When we politely tried to resolve it, the first staff member was dismissive and rude, refusing to even check availability. Another later told us, “I don’t sell beds, I sell rooms,” which was both unhelpful and unprofessional. Communication and basic courtesy were sorely lacking. Throughout our stay, it became clear that English-speaking guests were treated as second-class visitors. Staff consistently favoured Spanish-speaking guests, offering them friendlier service, faster attention, and even extra privileges we were denied. At one point, an attendant refused to let us play a second round of bowling but allowed the Spanish-speaking group beside us to continue without issue. Most staff refused to speak English at all, and entertainment was conducted exclusively in Spanish, leaving non-Spanish-speaking guests excluded. The buffet experience was equally disappointing. We were often seated at dirty tables with no cutlery or glasses and had to repeatedly ask for basic items like water or coffee. Some staff ignored us entirely, while others displayed visible annoyance when we asked for help. On our final night, we struggled to find a clean table, and dishes piled up because no one returned to serve or clear them. Cleanliness in the rooms was also unacceptable. I found a toenail clipping on the floor, the air conditioner didn’t work properly, and housekeeping skipped our room completely one day despite a tip and request for fresh towels. It took over an hour and a half just to receive bottled water after calling reception. The resort’s smoking policy is misleading - guests smoked everywhere, including around and even in the pool, and staff did nothing to enforce designated areas. To make matters worse, one of the two pools was drained mid-stay with no warning, leaving the remaining pool overcrowded. We also experienced a complete lack of respect for privacy: a staff member entered our room unannounced to hang a pest control notice, and pest control arrived earlier than stated the next day. One staff member even publicly scolded my boyfriend for “not speaking Spanish,” which was humiliating and completely inappropriate. The only positives were a kind waitress named Argentina and the bartender at the sports bar, who were genuinely friendly and professional. Unfortunately, they were the rare exceptions. While the property itself is large and visually appealing, the poor service, discrimination toward non-Spanish-speaking guests, and lack of cleanliness make this resort one to avoid. For the price we paid, the experience was unacceptable. I would not recommend Ocean Blue & Sand Beach Resort to anyone looking for a relaxing or enjoyable vacation.

An enjoyable resort Daniel De La Rosa, Rayner Guerrero, and Carlos Charles are an excellent team at the Privilege pool. They will keep your towels fresh and your drinks flowing. Carlos made us feel at home. A very hard worker, and I'm very pleased to have met him. Rayner will keep your spirits up and make you any special drink you want. Daniel will keep you fed poolside while keeping your drinks topped off. Hugo is by far the best bartender at the resort. You can find him in the Sports bar, dancing behind the bar, hustling drinks to make sure everyone is having a wonderful time. Great team, great vibes.
