Montego Bay, Jamaica: Coastal City with Tropical Jungles and Vibrant Markets

Situated on Jamaica's northwest coast, Montego Bay draws vacationers year-round with its temperate climate, clear waters, and postcard-perfect beaches. Just a short ways inland, freshwater rivers such as the Martha Brae cut through expanses of jungle and forested mountains, making for scenic rafting.

Years ago, Montego Bay was a thriving banana and sugar exporter. You'll find remnants of the city's past at Sam Sharpe Square, where cobblestone streets stretch past grand Georgian architecture and a cast-iron fountain donated by a former banana baron. The city’s dynamic "Hip Strip" buzzes with duty-free boutiques and lively flea markets hawking brightly colored textiles and carved wooden sculptures.

Loved it! We got a free room upgrade, which was nice. The resort is beautiful with amazing amenities. I received the most relaxing massage at the spa onsite and had some of the most delicious oxtail ever at a restaurant on site. I would love to stay here when we visit again.

Wasn't Worth the Amount of Money Paid - We Will Not Be Returning This was our 9th trip to Jamaica and our worst experience to date. We were extremely fatigued after enduring Amstar's transfer service to our resort - 1 hour waiting on the bus at airport while it filled to capacity and then an additional hour of travel time to the resort. The last thing we needed was to stand in line for an additional hour waiting to check-in at the hotel. No one met us with a welcome drink, no additional employees offered to expedite check-in for the 20+ people in line and, without a wrist band, we couldn't leave to get something to eat and then come back to check-in at a better time. Then, when we were finally at the desk and checking in, we were told our room was not ready even though it was past the official check-in time and, that we would need to come back after we ate to obtain our keys, waiting in the same long line to get them. There has to be a better check-in system than this. Management sure dropped the ball on this one. We went to Route 66 for dinner on our first night, but were told there'd be a 30 minute wait to be seated even though there were only 3 tables in this restaurant with 2-4 people at each. Once seated and we had ordered, our food never arrived and the restaurant still wasn't crowded. After 45 minutes we advised our server that we were ready to leave if our food wasn't coming out in the next 5 minutes. He pushed the kitchen for our order of brisket and corned beef, meats that are precooked, not made to order, and both were shriveled up dry pieces of meat when it arrived - completely inedible. We walked out without eating and stopped by Martha's Market buffet to get something to eat, but were told they couldn't let us in as it was at capacity (8:45 pm) even though we saw several empty tables or they could've asked us to wait for a table. Something's definitely wrong when you can't even get into the buffet for dinner. Good thing we had a late lunch because we had to go back to our room hungry. We received a phone call from guest relations the next morning asking how we liked the resort so far. I tried to stay positive by telling them the room was nice, but then said the check-in experience our first day and dining experience last night were horrible and that I did not see us returning to this resort in the future based on those experiences. I did tell them I was happy to have been able to make an online reservation for the Japanese restaurant for that evening, so I was hoping our dining experience would improve on our second night. To my surprise, Brison from concierge met us at dinner that night and talked to us for awhile about our experiences. She sent me a message through WhatsApp and told me to keep her in the loop regarding the rest of our week and let her know if she could help. I let her know that we had reservations at the Italian restaurant the next night and once again, she showed up to see how that day had been. Brison is such a lovely person, she made us feel heard and she was genuinely concerned about our experience on the resort. She made our next two night's dinner reservations and met us each of those night's for a chat. Our talks were very enjoyable. Through the WhatsApp I was also able to ask Brison for assistance when we lost power in our room and then again when we didn't receive housekeeping or mini-bar refills on our last day, finding out later that we had inadvertently put our deadbolt on when leaving the room that day which prevented staff from entering our room. Brison definitely made a tremendous difference in making the rest of our stay more enjoyable and we greatly appreciated her service. Additional Info: - The Michael Jackson Show on Saturday night in the theater was top-notch. Dancing was some of the best I have ever seen - The Italian Restaurant (La Locanda) was my favorite meal - The Indian/Hindu Restaurant (Thali) had the best interior decoration - The Japanese Restaurant (Sakura) has 4 tables but the cooks at 3 of the 4 need to be trained in showmanship. They just bang their knives on the counter and get the people to sing or introduce themselves while he cooks the meal. There was no knife juggling, jokes, or food antics like cutting an egg mid-air or throwing cooked shrimp to people who wanted to catch it with just their mouths. Very boring and very loud with all the banging and loud singing of stupid American songs that had nothing to do with the culture - Route 66 Restaurant - don't bother unless you want a burger and french fries or a salad. Those seemed to be cooked quickly. Their Brisket and Reuben sandwich are overcooked from being reheated after having cooked it that morning or days earlier. - The pool is huge with lots of chairs in the shade - The water park is really nice if you have small children. There's also a food and drink place over there so you don't need to leave the area to get something - The Jamaican Grill /Jerk Shack on the beach wasn't worth the wait time. Waited over 30 minutes in line and when finally at the counter, half of the food was gone with no additional being prepared. I wanted pork but only got their chicken which was very messy and full of bones. They also don't have knives to cut the chicken. - Beach in front of the non-privilege area isn't for swimming; full of rocks, seaweed, and debris. Small path to wade out, but you need swim shoes to protect your feet. The sand portion of this beach is bigger than it is on the privilege side, so if you only want to enjoy the breeze off of the ocean, this is the best side to do that. - Drinks appear watered down. I usually feel the buzz within the first few sips and there wasn't the slightest buzz after drinking the entire drink - Ceiling fan over the bed in the rooms has only 2 speeds: High or off. High was too cold at times and no way to adjust it. - No towel hooks outside the shower, so no place to hang a towel to use after showering. Closest place is on the small hand towel rack under one of the sink basins - Long waits at the restaurants because tables aren't promptly cleared - Towel Cards, if lost, are $20 each. We were paranoid that someone would take our towels when we left them at the beach or pool when getting something to eat.

Memorable Fantastic Enjoyable! I had a fantastic stay at Ocean Coral Spring! The resort offers a fantastic blend of relaxation and entertainment and I recommend it to anyone looking for an all-inclusive getaway. Beautiful Property: The resort itselflooks modern and well-maintained. Good Food: The variety and quality of the food were impressive. Friendly Staff: The staff throughout the resort were welcoming, attentive, helpful. Fun Activities: There was always something to do, from the lazy river, water park, beach sports, or evening entertainment. Only negative was the Wi-Fi strength in certain areas. Overall: Ocean Coral Spring provided a memorable and enjoyable vacation.

Mother's Day at OceanCoralSpring! One Ocean Coral Spring! We ended the hunt for a Mother's Day get away treat when we came across the beautiful property of Ocean Coral Spring. From the warm and courteous staff to the clean, spacious and welcoming environment, we realized we were in for a fabulous day! This mother's day experience was made special by staff at the different service areas, and acquaintances met along our path. Big up to Phillip Annikey, who was so accommodating, ensuring we had the best experience right to the end. Such a friendly and warm staff- Sutanya, Petrina, Alex, Toniann, Keith and the lady serving the fabulous banana split! We appreciate you all and can't wait to come again! A.Lawrence
