Hotel at a Glance: Ocean Crest Resort

The family-owned property is tucked amid pine trees in a remote part of northwest Washington, just outside Olympic National Park, and overlooks the Pacific coast. The hotel offers easy access to nature without sacrificing modern amenities, including an onsite spa. The Curtright family has owned the lodge for three generations and once called it home; they aim to make guests feel warm and welcomed.

  • Direct beach access: From this hotel’s doors, it’s only a short trek to the public beach.
  • Make a splash in the hotel’s indoor pool, which is open year-round.
  • Onsite spa offers relaxing therapies ranging from chair massages to hot-stone and deep-tissue massages.
  • Enjoy the outdoors and take advantage of the barbecue or picnic spots.

Olympic National Park: Forests, Mountains, and Colorful Tide Pools

Olympic National Park can feel like three parks in one: you can find everything from snowcapped mountains to ocean tide pools to ancient forests. One of the best ways to explore the sprawling wilderness is to drive on Highway 101, which circumnavigates the Olympic Peninsula. The highway zips along the Pacific coastline, passing plenty of scenic outlooks and trailheads. After a scenic drive, delve into the forest via the Peabody Creek Trail, which makes a half-mile loop from the visitor center’s parking lot. Most trails are open year-round, with opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter.

One of Olympic National Park’s most appealing features is its tide pools filled with aquatic plants and animals, such as the giant green anemone that looks like a blooming flower. You can explore the tide pools at low tide all year long, but the best time to visit is in the summer, when rangers host informative programs.

We visited the Ocean Crest back in 1997 and while the restaurant was wonderful (since then had burned down and is being rebuilt), the rooms need a serious refresh. They are old and run down. Carpets are disgusting as is the bedding. I don't think it would take much money to spruce it up a bit! We did love Mr. Kitty! The hotel cat.

Greatly disappointed that the restaurant is no longer there, but happy with the dog room and would love to go back.
