Punta Cana, Dominican Republic: Miles of White-Sand Beaches

When Christopher Columbus landed on the Dominican Republic more than five centuries ago, he described it as "a beautiful island paradise." Punta Cana, located on the island's easternmost tip, lays legitimate claim to that description. The coast stretches for more than 20 miles and is dotted with coconut palms, chaise lounges, and laid-back bars. Glitzy resorts feature prominently along the shoreline, but Playa El Cortecito, a short drive up the coast, harks back to earlier times. Brightly colored thatched-roof shacks line the beach, and local fishermen bring their boats to shore each afternoon with the day's catch.

This resort is beautiful. The food was OK it was a hit or miss on the restaurants and staff were very friendly. The only thing that we didn’t like was that we spend it almost 2 hours with some sales people and they told us they were going to take us to breakfast and show us the resort and it ended up being a sales meeting. Other than that we had a great time.

Long but fair review First off, we have been to the Dominican 3 times now and this is not our favorite destination but I try to be fair in my reviews. Stayed in the Adults section El Beso, we had a rooftop Jacuzzi and it was fantastic....loved the room. Another awesome feature is the lazy river, 2 laps a day keeps stress at bay. Although the beach is wavy, rocky and non swimmable the lagoon was perfect for swimming but not many people take advantage of this. The beach is walkable with proper shoes in both directions (lots of debris and garbage) but be careful as there was a guest robbed by machete while jogging off property). There are lots of pools including a giant bubble tub...be sure to take your own floaty toys for full relaxation. A lot of people leave their floaties when they checkout and post on the Ocean El Faro facebook page as to where you can pick them up. Food was just okay with the Sakura restaurant leading the pack with the best....great show, great food! A couple of shout outs to great staff members before I get into why we will never go back. Amy for the fantastic mediation, yoga and cold plunge at the beach (congratulations on the wedding), Randy "macho man" at the snack bar with fantastic crepes, service with a smile and dance from Roselinna at the icecream shop and Jonathan at the pool bar with the great drinks (if you like Bailey's and dont want to pay for privilege try something better...Gressy!) and supply of ice for a pinched nerve. Apart from these people (I'm sure there are more) the service and attentiveness was horrible...the feeling you get is that this is simply a job and you are a nuisance and they would rather be someplace else (is it the people or trickle down from treatment of staff by management?). Our rooftop area had empty beer cans everwhere and a hot tub full of yellow dirty water when we arrived...I wonder what else was missed and they only clean the bare minimum even with daily tips. The theatre entertainment held no interest for us at all..circus show, magic show etc., I guess good for kids but nothing for us. Other entertainment throughout the grounds was okay if you could find it.... communication and information (consistent and correct) was difficult to come by. The silent party that we were looking forward to is actually 2 different nights, one at the El Faro lobby...9pm or 10pm depending on who you talk to and the other by the beach at El Bezo which was completely a waste of time. They were also trying something new with a nightly beach party till 11 at the El Bezo side by pumping out concert level noise (and sometimes vulgar music) with no escape even behind closed doors, this caused many complaints from so many people but they kept doing it. The last straw when leaving we were to be picked up for the airport at 9:15 am (in the lobby at 9:05). They called us saying our transportation was early...we hustled down and even though we were on the road before 9:15 we were rudely told we were late. Between lack of friendliness, attentiveness and communication we will never be going back.
