Punta Cana, Dominican Republic: Miles of White-Sand Beaches

When Christopher Columbus landed on the Dominican Republic more than five centuries ago, he described it as "a beautiful island paradise." Punta Cana, located on the island's easternmost tip, lays legitimate claim to that description. The coast stretches for more than 20 miles and is dotted with coconut palms, chaise lounges, and laid-back bars. Glitzy resorts feature prominently along the shoreline, but Playa El Cortecito, a short drive up the coast, harks back to earlier times. Brightly colored thatched-roof shacks line the beach, and local fishermen bring their boats to shore each afternoon with the day's catch.

This resort is beautiful. The food was OK it was a hit or miss on the restaurants and staff were very friendly. The only thing that we didn’t like was that we spend it almost 2 hours with some sales people and they told us they were going to take us to breakfast and show us the resort and it ended up being a sales meeting. Other than that we had a great time.

Honest review of Ocean El Faro I am writing this review while I am still here at Ocean El Faro - El Beso Adults section. My spouse and I are here to celebrate my birthday week. We are checked in at room 12109 with a swim up room. As we were being checked in, we were greeted by the concierge or lobby representative trying to establish rapport and stating that anything we need shall be attended to. We were glad and appreciative of the gesture even when we know that we are being targeted to attend a membership presentation on our 1st day. First impressions on our room - a little outdated but the swim up makes it ok. One thing we noticed is that we were missing a hanging chair. We are the only unit in the bldg that did not have a hanging chair. I complained about this since Sunday during our presentation and to the desk concierge a couple of times. Today, after complaining about this chair since Sunday, we finally got the freaking chair! It took them three(3) days to finally act on the complaint. I guess the concierge and the presentation folks did not do anything about my complaints at all!!! Kinda frustrating! Restaurants - we have tried the Sakura, Italian and Steakhouse. We both loved them all. The Pez, which is only for El Beso guests is a whole lot better than being at the main buffet. The wait staff at the buffet needs to be trained with better customer service. No one will come to you unless you flag them. On our first day, we both asked for napkins and the waiter threw the napkins at the table without remorse. I opted not to provide his name as he may end up losing his job. The Pez wait staff needs to be commended. All 3 of them are very pleasant and always have a smile when serving you. We will be here till next Saturday. I will update this review till then.

VERY disappointing! How disappointing. We looked at the reviews and thought this place must be good. In reality, it was really disappointing. Let me start with the reviews...don't believe them...staff at the resort walk around the swimming pools with QR codes asking guests to scan them. They then take your phone and write themselves a 5* review. The reviews DO NOT reflect our experience of the resort. Positives: - Good location. - Resort is set out well. - Nice reception area. Negatives: - The food is terrible and i mean really really bad. We went to some of the restaurants, took a couple of bites of food and then left. Speaking to other people at the resort they were of the same opinion. - You have to book some of the restaurants in advance, but with the concierge help we managed to do this relatively easily, however we occasionally arrived at a restaurant to be told it was full and we would have to wait (even with a booking) not a problem, we are on vacation, however then you realise that the restaurant is less than half full, honestly less than half full. This happened on numerous occasions and we can only assume they don't have the staff to operate them. - We found the staff, particularly in the restaurants to be uninterested. Its a generalisation and of course there were some great staff, but in the main staff give the opinion they don't want to be there. - Drinks were disappointing. Draft inclusive beer was terrible, i simply couldn't drink it, but other people did, so maybe this was just me or they were catering to a more local taste, who knows. - They operate something similar to a holiday time share scheme and use similar sales tactics. Staff throughout the resort target you with free t-shirts, vouchers etc to go and listen to a sales pitch about savings they can offer you on future holidays. This is done in the lighthouse. They asked us to pay $9,000 on the day followed by several hundred dollars a month. I think this is really disappoint and reflects the hotel ownership. Who wants to be targeted with high pressure time share sales within their own resort. - We booked two rooms, one was overlooking one of the pools and was clean, bright and nice, the other faced away from the pool and was dull, dirty and damp. For us as a family it was a really disappointing experience and the worst holiday resort experience of its type (all inclusive beach holiday) in many years. Its honestly a real shame as the resort has so much potential. Its in a good location and the resort is set out well, however, it lacks leadership and management. At no point did we experience management directing staff or auditing food etc, it seems the staff are just left to it. Ways to improve: - Train staff to provide a better service. - Improve hands on management and oversight of staff doing day to day tasks. In reality, staff are not going to excel if just let to it with no oversight. - Major overhaul of the restaurants is required from top to bottom, from staff training to food. - Remove the time share sales operation. - Rooms are tired and need improvement. - he resort is set out well until we realised that staff at the resort walk around the swimming pools during the day. Final comment - Dont waste your money here until things improve. There are much better resorts on the island at a similar price point.
