Myrtle Beach, SC: The Grand Strand’s Timeless Coastal Gem

Nestled along South Carolina’s sun-drenched coastline, Myrtle Beach stands as the crown jewel of the Grand Strand, a 60-mile stretch of pristine shoreline steeped in history and natural beauty. Founded as a quiet seaside retreat in the early 20th century, this vibrant city has evolved into a world-class destination while retaining its Southern charm. The rhythmic crash of Atlantic waves against wide, sandy beaches has lured generations of travelers, from families building sandcastles to golfers teeing off on championship courses. Myrtle Beach’s iconic boardwalk, a bustling artery of saltwater taffy shops and old-fashioned arcades, whispers tales of simpler times when vacationers arrived by train for breezy summer escapes.

Beyond its famous beaches, Myrtle Beach thrives as a cultural crossroads where maritime heritage meets modern allure. The Murrells Inlet MarshWalk, just south of the city, preserves the area’s fishing village roots with dockside seafood shacks serving the day’s catch. Meanwhile, the city’s skyline—punctuated by the SkyWheel’s glowing gondolas—reflects its dynamic growth. From the Revolutionary War-era charms of nearby Georgetown to the live oak canopies of Brookgreen Gardens, the region invites exploration of its layered history. Whether savoring fresh oysters at a waterfront tavern or tracing the footsteps of pirates along the Waccamaw River, visitors discover a destination where every grain of sand holds a story.

It’s our 5 year anniversary and definitely not disappointed Very clean and updated room. This is for our 5 year anniversary and couldn’t ask for a better place. But was contacted by text on our anniversary day to inform us that the water is shut off from 12:00 until further notice. Which was no notice ahead of time and ruined our plans as far as taking our showers and going to dinner at 3:00. They should have told people yesterday and they could have planned accordingly.

Clean Place, Poor Service, Innacurate Water Description The property is nice and clean. Bed is comfortable, fluffy pillows. We didn't have the best experience with customer service and I really feel as though the website is inaccurately describing the pools. 1) There are NO indoor pools. They are exposed to the outside, keep that in mind. 2) The water is NOT heated. I'm from a state in the mountains we're avg temp in summer is 70, the waterpark there is heated. These waterpark splash pad area are freezing!! Also the slide was barely open our week here, don't plan on using it in April much at all. The "indoor pool" was not used by anyone the whole time we were here as it is freezing. Only a few kids I saw use the waterpark. 3) Customer service is lacking. The room for 7 people came with 1 roll TP in each bathroom, that's it. Went down day 3, asked for TP and only gave 1 roll. Other bathroom.runs out, I call down early morning for some, nothing. Later afternoon we go down, ask for 2 rolls and they gave 1. Found housekeeping, they had none at their cart so I had to remind them of their housekeeping room on our floor- she went, looked and gave two. 4) Called down to have our room attended on day 4, needed sheets changed. They left a bag of sheets outside our door I thought, nope was a blanket. Called down about 4 that day again and they said it will get done the next day. Next day happens, I call down at like 12 because towels were left inside room and no sheet change-they said task will be done shortly. 5pm.call down again to let them know i at least need one set of sheets and finally someone came. I let her know I needed all done, rolled her eyes and I said at least one room bc sheet had been soiled. so she did one bed. Aside from that breakfast was great- the morning we could have it. An older woman was our server and she was such a breath of fresh air!! However, Something happened, a flood maybe and couldn't eat at breakfast so directed us next door at 11am....much past breakfast time and that was annoying because they should have let everyone know sooner. We had coupons to use for ours so next day had to go next door to grand cayman, a lesser breakfast with no juice included. Which is odd as it's included with ocean reef resort breakfast. I will say the breakfast at ocean reef is fantastic, best I've had in my travels and worth the money. Omelette station was great, which they don't have at grand cayman. This place is not within walking distance for shops, if you have teenagers looking for that book further North. It is a busy area, beach is quite busy but not bad in April. I've stayed at diff properties and this seems to be the best kept- but if you expect what the website says of indoor pool and heated water you won't get it. Overall, I'm not sure if I would book this place again. I did visit Kingston Plantation and it looked awesome, gated area and their waterpark had someone attending their two slides when I drove around.

Why go anywhere else! We spent 4 nights there. This was our 7th time in the last 10 years. We stayed on the 17th floor. It was just remodled and it looks great! The girl at the front desk ( I didn’t get her name) went above and beyond to make sure we checked in ASAP. When we got in the room, we didn’t have a hair dryer, and they brought us one in 5 minutes! We had breakfast (buffet) at the Cafe du Port. It was very nice with a great view. EVERYONE was so friendly. This place is why we keep coming back. Why would you go anywhere else?!!!
