The Reef Coco beach was fantastic. They have everything you need from bicycles to ride around, daily activities like water volleyball, beach yoga, free drinks at the swim up bar, cabanas at the pool, 3 hot tubs, 4 restaurants. The Samurai Japanese steakhouse was awesome, it is the only restaurant that isn’t included in the all inclusive, but it’s only $10 per person for sushi, hibachi and dessert

Playa del Carmen, Mexico: Trendy Beach Area and Diving Destination

Just across the sea from the island of Cozumel, Playa del Carmen has been called "the hippest city in all of the Yucatán Peninsula" by Lonely Planet. The laid-back beach bars and cafés have a way of converting vacationers into expats, but Playa's most compelling draw might be its cenotes—cavernous sinkholes filled with turquoise pools. The water in the cenotes is crystal clear, particularly at the lily-pad-dotted Xlacah cenote, where you can snorkel among schools of colorful fish.

To the south, you'll find preserved ruins of pre-Columbian cities. Tulum's crumbling temples are situated above a dramatic ocean bluff, and Coba's enormous pyramid rises between two lagoons. For a fun day trip, hop aboard the ferry to Cozumel, which docks at the pier east of Calle 1. There are about a dozen dive shops on Cozumel, and they offer trips offshore to the reefs that Jacques Cousteau declared some of the world's most beautiful.

Poor food. Over all hotel standards are good, it’s cleaned continuously. Excellent location, 10 min walk to 5th avenue. Staff are friendly and welcoming. Rooms are cleaned daily, fresh towels, and Spacious. Downfall…… the hotel buffet restaurant is poor, not much selection. No taste to the food. Food is always luke warm. The pre booked restaurant ( Italian) absolutely horrible. Snack bar is ok but again it’s Luke warm. Not much for evening entertainment. Every time it rains the power goes off, hotel was without power for roughly 6-7 hours. The beach smells of sewage most days and is worse when it rains. Hotel is pretty quiet mainly. I don’t feel this hotel was worth the money I paid, I have stayed in a few hotels in Mexico and this one is a definite no no for me.

Coco Reef Hotel moved us to sister hotel, The Reef 28. On 11/8/25, we went to check into the Coco Reef. When we got there, they said 25 rooms would be unavailable until the next day. There was no communication before we arrived that there would be any issues with our check in. They said we would upgrade us at their sister resort, Reef 28, as well as at Coco Reef when we go to go back the next day. The upgrade included top shelf liquor at both places, and the opportunity to dine at specialty restaurants. When we got to Reef 28, we were disappointed. We paid for a resort experience, and Reef 28 was a hotel. We paid for beach access and a huge swim up pool with a bar, Reef 28 place had neither. The top shelf liquor we were promised at Reef 28, not accessible to us according to their staff. Our toilet stopped working several times throughout our stay. Our tv didn’t work half the night and we did not have hot water for the shower. When we got to Coco Reef, we had a great experience that showed us how much a 1/3 of our stay was lacking. While we understand the upgrade to top shelf liquor was given, that is not an amenity we cared about, because then we would have booked it in the first plave. When we brought up that our Reef 28 stay had many problems, we were told to review on TripAdvisor so here we are. Loved Coco Reef, Reef 28 was not a hotel we would have picked based on the availability of different amenities, and we missed those for a third of our trip. While we did have a great experience at Coco Reef, I am hesitant to book a future stay with them if it is not a guarantee I will be able to stay at the resort I paid for. When family asked how our trip was, we shared about being moved to a different hotel. They told us that being moved to another hotel happened to their friends as well and that they were dissatisfied as well.
