Key West, Florida: Dazzling Sunsets, Six-Toed Cats, and Cuban Culture

Located just off Florida’s southernmost tip and north of Cuba, the island of Key West is undoubtedly the most famous of the Florida Keys. Frommer’s calls it “the land of the eternal vacation.” Most tourists come to Key West’s gulf-side beaches to snorkel, surf, or fish, but no trip to Key West is complete without a visit to the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, where the author lived, worked, and kept his six-toed cats. More than 50 descendants of those famous felines still prowl the grounds of the museum to this day.

At nighttime, locals and visitors alike converge on the Mallory Square Dock to watch the sun dip below the Gulf of Mexico, casting swaths of deep orange and pink against the horizon. The spectacle is so breathtaking that it inspires a sunset celebration each night. The dock comes to life with traveling psychics, one-man bands, and food vendors serving fresh-squeezed lemonade and plantain chips.

Great Stay I recently stayed at this resort and had a wonderful experience overall. The property is beautifully maintained and incredibly clean, which immediately made me feel comfortable and at ease. One of the standout features of the resort was the pool area—spacious, well-kept, and perfect for both relaxation and family fun. The variety of pools gave us plenty of options, whether we wanted a quiet spot to unwind or a livelier atmosphere.

Great Value with Thoughtful Amenities The lobby and rooms are beautifully decorated, clean, giving the property a welcoming and stylish feel. This place offers great value, especially considering the number of amenities: roundtrip shuttle to downtown Key West, kayaks, bikes, and even some tours like the mangrove kayak tour. Breakfast was good, but lunch stood out as significantly better. Service overall was average, but a few team members really stood out—particularly the bellman (Patrick), shuttle drivers, and staff at the equipment rental hut, all of whom were friendly and helpful. The only real downside was that the pools water looked murky during our entire stay. Despite that, we had a great time and appreciated all the staff. We will most likely come back for the reasons listed above.

Great family spring break! We stayed as a family of 4, over Easter weekend for 5 nights. Room had a great view with easy access to pool and onsite activities. Love that they had scheduled activities for families, as well as paddle boards and kayaks. We also made our own genuine stone bracelets with a local jeweler. We had one noisy neighbor at night and it was addressed immediately with a check in the next morning. Room was nice, only issue was an incredibly small fridge that didn’t stay cold. Very responsive, friendly staff! Loved having the coffee bar and nice restaurant onsite!
