Corpus Christi, Texas: Walkable Downtown and Floating Naval Museum

Even though it’s the largest city on Texas’s gulf coast, Corpus Christi has a small-town feel with lack of urban sprawl. The walkable downtown has a promenade that encourages leisurely strolls and bike rides along the bay. Explore the district’s shops and eateries—the seafood and Tex-Mex here are top-notch, thanks to the city’s coastal location and large Hispanic population.

Catch a downtown trolley to the USS Lexington, a floating naval museum inside of a massive World War II–era aircraft carrier. Inside, you can tour the ship’s decks, quarters, and narrow passages. Exhibits and IMAX movies in the onsite theater detail the ship’s history, and the flight deck displays an array of vintage aircraft from the 1930s to the 1960s.

Right next to the USS Lexington, Corpus Christi’s museum district is another cultural gem. Some of the highlights include the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History and the Texas State Museum of Asian Cultures & Education Center. At the Texas State Aquarium, kids and adults find themselves face-to-face with sharks, alligators, octopi, and other marine animals found throughout the Gulf of Mexico and coastal Texas.

Best stay sense my last Carribean cruise. I stayed at this Omni for a convention, so my room was paid for, but I was so impressed by my experience that I would love to stay there more but the price is a little out of my budget. The staff was great and the location was very nice.

Location and Service Makes this hotel Had a very pleasant stay this past weekend. Let me cover the details. First, let me say that this is the best hotel in Corpus Christi. So if you see bad reviews, remember it only gets worse. Location - the best. Right on the waterfront and close to all the great downtown restaurants and entertainment. Landry's is always great. BUS, Rockit, and Cassidy's have live music from time to time. We rarely had to drive anywhere. Gotta love that. Rooms - they are dated and could use some TLC. Our two tables in our bayside room were nicked all over. Our bathroom was generic. Whoever checks the shampoo levels did not before we got there (room 1560, arrival 9-6), nor did they refill it on the cleaning of 9-7. It ran out 9-8 morning. But everything was functional and the AC's worked great. Water was no issue either. Beds and pillows were fine. As for the "drag racing." Corpus has done a great job policing this. Friday night I saw two police cars with their lights continuously on at the end of the boulevard to make sure no one was drag racing. They also have a video camera constantly active there too. What they cannot do is stop the loud sounds of the motorcycles and hot rods that do not have proper mufflers. So riders like to rev their engines and accelerate fast and that is loud. Very little you can do about that. The hotel has ear plugs in their vanity kits. But also, when you set the AC on before bed, turn the fan from auto to on max. Helps drown out the sounds and we had no issues. If you have a balcony, the AC reverts back to auto and 70 whenever you open and close the door. Food and Service - top notch. Republic is arguably the best restaurant in town. Yes, you will pay. The bar and lunch place was great. My only knock with Republic was they seemed too busy on Saturday night. Took 30 minutes to get our first drink and bread after we were seated. Another suggestion I would have is to change the hours of the bar. Website shows midnight on weekends, but they closed a bit after 11. I get not staying open when no one is there, but put 11 and caveat it that it might be later. Tip - the fresh fish place to buy is on the third (north to south) L-shape pier at the end. Literally everything is caught daily. Bought the best shrimp and fish there. Another curious thing - we are Select Guest members. Yet we did not get the email asking for feedback after the visit. This should be standard and smacks of the property worrying about bad reviews. Overall they had all the amenities and we would go back and stay here the next time we come to Corpus.

Excellent waterfront hotel This Omni is easy to get to and waterfront. Everything and everywhere were clean and kept up well. The hotel looked fresh and very nicely decorated. Walking distance to the marina and waterfront restaurants. Indoor-outdoor pools and hot tubs. Great restaurants. Check in was quick. All employees we came in contact with were polite and helpful. We will definitely come back. One con I will list is the 27.00 per night parking fee for SELF parking. That’s very steep. And the pool bar was never open the whole time we were there. But this is a great option for wanting to stay by the waterfront, USS Lexington, and marina while visiting Corpus Christi.
