Laguna Beach, California: Seaside Art Community with Cliffside Mansions and Tide Pools

Laguna Beach is widely known as an affluent seaside community just off the iconic Pacific Coast Highway, thanks in part to the MTV reality show Laguna Beach. The Orange County city has its fair share of elaborate mansions, high-end boutiques, and upscale restaurants, but what sets Laguna Beach apart is its artistic scene. The city’s artistic community is set mainly in the Laguna Village neighborhood, where visitors can browse galleries and watch artisans working in their studios.

In typical Southern California fashion, visitors are drawn to the city’s Main Beach, where they lounge by the ocean and play volleyball along the boardwalk. Toward the beach’s north end lies Bird Rock, a towering rock formation where seabirds often gather. Sea slugs, red urchins, and sea cucumbers can be spotted swimming in the tide pools around the rock when the tide ebbs.

Disappointing – Not Worth the Price I had high hopes for the Pacific Edge Hotel given its location, but unfortunately, our experience fell short in several key areas. - The hot tub was dirty and uninviting. - Our room keys stopped working three separate times, which was frustrating. - The room was uncomfortably hot when the AC was off, and when turned on, the AC unit was extremely loud making it difficult to sleep either way. - An outdoor hallway light near our room was extremely bright and fluorescent, shining directly into the room at night and making it hard to sleep for anyone sensitive to light. - The in-room phone didn’t work, so we had to call the front desk from our personal phones. We asked to change rooms (and were even willing to pay extra), but after being told we’d get a call back, we never did. When we followed up, we were told no rooms were available. - On our last day, the in-room coffee machine stopped working. To their credit, it was quickly replaced, and the man who helped us was very kind and apologetic. - The carpeted floors felt a bit dirty, providing slippers would be a nice touch. - Overall, the room felt outdated, small, and not aligned with the high room rate. The photos online are quite misleading and don’t accurately reflect the rooms in our experience. - Our building also did not have an elevator, which was very inconvenient with luggage. - While the front desk staff was friendly, they seemed overwhelmed. It might be worth reallocating some valet staff (especially when cars are being parked just a few feet away) to support the front desk. In the end, the quality of the hotel did not justify the cost, and we’re unlikely to return.

Good for the price & location. Lacking in luxury. The photos online were beautiful and the hotel staff in person were great. However, this place is run down! Furniture, kitchen & appliances and amenities are lacking & our oven was not usable. The location is in perfect walking distance to everything Laguna has to offer & it's right on the beach. We were just disappointed thinking the hotel was going to feel renovated and it still felt old and grimy. I would recommend if you are all about the location and need an affordable price, but if you are booking this with "luxury" or "remodeled" in mind, this is not the place.

Favorite Summer Getaway We enjoy that Pacific Edge is right on the beach and we don’t have to bring chairs/towels, etc. with us. Staff is always friendly and helpful. Some rooms have dated cabinets, but are generously sized with nice views and comfortable beds. The hotel is in close proximity to restaurants and shops as well as a grocery store which is great if you have a room with a kitchen. The hotel has a relaxed, family friendly vibe.
