Laguna Beach, California: Seaside Art Community with Cliffside Mansions and Tide Pools

Laguna Beach is widely known as an affluent seaside community just off the iconic Pacific Coast Highway, thanks in part to the MTV reality show Laguna Beach. The Orange County city has its fair share of elaborate mansions, high-end boutiques, and upscale restaurants, but what sets Laguna Beach apart is its artistic scene. The city’s artistic community is set mainly in the Laguna Village neighborhood, where visitors can browse galleries and watch artisans working in their studios.

In typical Southern California fashion, visitors are drawn to the city’s Main Beach, where they lounge by the ocean and play volleyball along the boardwalk. Toward the beach’s north end lies Bird Rock, a towering rock formation where seabirds often gather. Sea slugs, red urchins, and sea cucumbers can be spotted swimming in the tide pools around the rock when the tide ebbs.

A Weekend in Paradise My extended family and I spent the weekend for my son's wedding. My group arrived a day early and rented a family suite and then moved the next day to the ocean front rooms originally reserved. We had balconies literally over the beach with beautiful views. The staff member that helped us 2 days in a row worked miracles helping with late check out and early check in and was able to keep all the moving parts organized. Her name was IRENE and she really was a miracle worker and very patient with all the different requests and logistics of meeting the needs of our group. The rooms were very comfortable and clean and the beach was literally just steps away and very accessible. The location was good for multiple shops nearby and the price for rooms were worth it for all of the above.

Zero on all counts Worst experience of our travels. In our 80s, hotel recommended by several sources. Went to CA for grandson’s wedding, booked in Feb/Mar timeframe for Labor Day weekend wedding. Paid premium price for ocean view room. $700+hotel fees/night. This hotel is NOT a connected building but disparate buildings with no coordination. We had premier building, motel 6 would have been better. Sparse room, typical bed room with open floor plan including an unasked for kitchen that had NO dishes or utensils despite our asking for them, and despite having a dishwasher but no microwave or oven. Bottled water not included but available in lobby for $10/bottle. NO bellhop service. Our building was out the lobby down a lower level, across a driveway, down a paved driveway, up a few stairs to tiny elevator with ocean view if you walk outside room door to public balcony. Family had 6 rooms in total; were spread across multiple buildings, all unconnected, all disappointing. Sorry I didn’t take pictures so you won’t stay here. Called hotel service but said this was what our expensive room included, no more, terrible service except for a kind parking lot attendant who helped us with luggage as we struggled down the paved driveway ramp toward the building. If I could have rated zero, I would have.

Hubbys birthday getaway in Laguna Staying at Pacific Edge Hotel was an amazing experience! The ocean view from the tower 4 room was absolutely breathtaking—nothing beats waking up to waves crashing right outside your window. The location couldn’t be better, right on the sand in the heart of Laguna Beach, with everything just a short walk away. The staff was welcoming and made the stay even more enjoyable. If you’re looking for a relaxing getaway with stunning views and that true Laguna vibe, this is the perfect spot. I can’t wait to come back!
