Laguna Beach, California: Seaside Art Community with Cliffside Mansions and Tide Pools

Laguna Beach is widely known as an affluent seaside community just off the iconic Pacific Coast Highway, thanks in part to the MTV reality show Laguna Beach. The Orange County city has its fair share of elaborate mansions, high-end boutiques, and upscale restaurants, but what sets Laguna Beach apart is its artistic scene. The city’s artistic community is set mainly in the Laguna Village neighborhood, where visitors can browse galleries and watch artisans working in their studios.

In typical Southern California fashion, visitors are drawn to the city’s Main Beach, where they lounge by the ocean and play volleyball along the boardwalk. Toward the beach’s north end lies Bird Rock, a towering rock formation where seabirds often gather. Sea slugs, red urchins, and sea cucumbers can be spotted swimming in the tide pools around the rock when the tide ebbs.

Definitely visiting again! Even though it rained we had a wonderful time! Easy walking to fun restaurants and shopping! The staff was so friendly and the rooms were very clean and comfortable!!

Great location, run down facilities The location and staff are great, but the hotel itself is very rundown including the rooms. Everything could really use a deep clean. The temperature control was also broken in our room so it was stuffy and hot to the point we had to run the a/c unit all night (in winter). Terrible sleep and I wouldn’t stay here again. The location was perfect though.

Misleading listing and unacceptable room conditions This stay was frustrating from start to finish and nowhere near what was advertised. To begin with, although the hotel promotes itself as a beachfront property, they operate multiple buildings. We were placed in a unit facing the street, not the beach, which completely changed the experience and should be clearly disclosed during booking. We had prepaid in full when making the reservation, yet were charged again at check-in. Thankfully, I noticed the duplicate charge and brought it to their attention, and it was refunded — but this is not something guests should have to catch themselves. On top of that, I had booked a standard queen room, but we were initially given a double twin bed room instead. We had to return to reception to correct this, which resulted in spending nearly 40 minutes at the front desk dealing with issues that should never have happened in the first place. The room we eventually received was old, worn, and poorly maintained. Cleanliness and overall condition were below acceptable standards, and the space felt neglected and outdated. Valet parking at $45 per night was communicated in advance, but given the room quality, location, and overall disorganization, it felt completely unjustified. This property relies heavily on branding and selective marketing photos, but the reality — especially if you are not placed in an ocean-facing building — does not match what is advertised. Between the incorrect charges, room mix-up, and time wasted resolving basic issues, this stay was not worth the money or the effort. I would not stay here again and strongly recommend confirming exact room type and building location before booking — or choosing another hotel altogether.
