South Lake Tahoe, California: Year-Round Haven for Outdoor Adventures and Late-Night Revelry

Lake Tahoe has no real off-season; people find ways to make use of its pristine water, beaches, and mountains all year long. In the summer, the lake’s clear, freshwater surface—which straddles the California-Nevada border—is dotted with swimmers, boaters, and jet skiers. Several ski resorts with world-class slopes typically stay open from November to April, and Emerald Bay State Park is accessible year-round. A moderately easy hike to the base of Lower Eagle Falls reveals breathtaking views of the waterfalls crashing down from above.

A diverse crowd of spectators gathers at night for South Lake Tahoe’s various events, which range from wine and food festivals to rock concerts and fireworks displays. A few miles northwest of South Lake Tahoe sits Stateline, Nevada, where a handful of casinos host high-stakes games of blackjack and solitaire.

While transferring our things to the hotel room one of my favorite scarves was dropped in the parking lot without my knowing. May (the wonderful owner/manager) found it and held onto it until the next time she saw me. She was incredibly kind and accommodating - great stay!

This place is terrible! Rip off! The room, including carpet, furniture, walls, were filthy. The thrift store furniture was scratched. Filthy blinds didn’t shut out light. No curtains. Torn and stained lampshades, one lamp nonfunctional. Broken shelves and dangling door latch in bathroom. Mold in shower, loose toilet. Bed was way too soft that caused severe back pain. A/C extremely loud and not working properly. I slept for only two hours because of all of this. Owner told me not to flush TP down the and to put it in the open basket waste receptacle, even with poop on it! The blanket smelled of mildew which the owner replaced w another smelly blanket, then a third that was okay. She said sarcastically “Be careful the coffee might give you diarrhea.” This was after I asked for a refund. She also said she was very rich and had 4 motels. I suggested she spend some of her money fixing this one up. She was rude from the time we arrived. Her office had a filthy fish bowl in it, her reception desk was covered and stacked high w papers and unopened mail and the office smelled like a pet store. The photos (and reviews) she has posted online are from years ago when somebody else owned it. I mentioned that to her and she said “well you know how photos can be”. I asked for a refund and she refused it. We only stayed one night even though we paid for two. I told my credit card company about her misrepresentation and filed a claim.

Awful service and misleading advertising I can't say much about the hotel as they tried to scam me before I even stayed there. I booked this motel through Expedia who had a rate advertised (the same rate was also advertised on hotel.com and other booking sites), within 10 min of booking I got a message from the hotel asking me to call them as they wanted to increase the rate by 4x. They falsely told expedia there was a problem with my payment - when I called the hotel they told me they never even tried to charge my card just that the rate was wrong. Misleading advertising and expedia of course did nothing about it as they just claimed that the hotel told them my payment didn't work.

Motel Thank you Mae for a fantastic stay. With so much choice of places to stay we were glad to have chosen your motel. Rooms clean big enough, fridge was a welcoming addition. Bed extremely comfortable. You were a fabulous hostess and I am glad to have known you. Thank you again. Diego De la Ruelle
