Times Square, Manhattan: Flashy Neon Lights and World-Class Culture

Times Square is at the intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. The famous address—affectionately known as “the Crossroads of the World”—is home to hypnotizing billboards, giant wraparound news tickers, and the neon lights of Broadway. Beyond the glitz and gimmicks, there are a number of cultural offerings in the area, ranging from museums to Michelin-rated restaurants. Buildings of historical and architectural interest include the Paramount Building and One Times Square, the site of the annual New Year's Eve ball drop.

Nearby, the Museum of Modern Art houses a trove of masterpieces including Vincent van Gogh's The Starry Night, Claude Monet's Water Lilies paintings, and Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans. Save time for a stroll through the museum's outdoor sculpture garden, where installations are clustered around sparkling reflecting pools. About a mile north of Times Square, the David H. Koch Theater is home to one of the world’s foremost dance companies—the New York City Ballet, which stages contemporary works as well as classics like Swan Lake and The Nutcracker.

A disappointing stay I often travel alone when visiting New York, and wherever I have stayed, am usually met with a modicum of friendliness, and given a pleasant room. Not this time. The lobby and lounge are large, comfortable spaces but for me, my room experience and staff encounters were anything but comfortable. I had 2 small meals in the lounge, which were good, as was the service there. But my room was horrible and the front desk staff borderine surly. This is a large, busy hotel, but it was not full. I was given a dark, noisy and not entirely clean room, directly positioned behind the 4-elevator bank and facing other occupied rooms across a small courtyard. One night was enough. My request to change rooms was honored, but without grace or assistance in moving (I had to repack and store my belongings for the entire next day). I accepted the replacement room, which was quieter and with a larger window, but it turned out that the window shade did not fully operate, nor the phone work at all, and the bathroom sink had what appeared to be visible mildew. Refurbished? Good customer service? I think not.

Avoid !! Totally ruined our first night in NYC. We had a disastrous experience at this hotel. We arrived from the UK at around 6pm and were met with a very frosty reception; the lady on the front desk was not welcoming at all and was snappy with us. We were told that the room we booked last October was not available so we were being upgraded to a better room. We were given a key and after queueing at the lifts we located the "upgraded room" but couldn't get in. We lugged two kids and four cases back to reception (after queueing again for lift) and got another key (no apology). After queueing again for the lift we returned to the room to discover that although we had booked a superior, corner room with two queen beds, our "upgrade" was to a room with one queen and one small sofa bed. We returned downstairs and explained that we weren't happy and were told that the room we had booked was empty but hadn't been cleaned and wouldn't be until the morning. The Manager said that the sofa bed had now been made up and promised we would be in the room we had booked the following day. After queueing again for the lifts we went to the room, only to find that the sofa was still a sofa so returned back downstairs and questioned the manager again. She apologised and offered us a free meal in the restaurant as a gesture of good will. She also offered to waver $100 tax and to take $100 off the bill for two nights of our stay. By now we were exhausted, it was gone 1.30am UK time so we reluctantly agreed and went into the restaurant, but clearly we would have preferred to not have the money off and been able to unpack and settle in the right room. We sat in the restaurant for around 20 minutes without any service (not even a drink) so my husband approached the bar and was sternly told that it was table service only. My husband explained that we had been waiting 20 mins and was reassured that someone would be over to take our order. 10 minutes later we gave up and left. The kids were shattered and starving so we found a place nearby but unfortunately with it now being past 2.30am UK time my son (age 8) fell asleep in the restaurant before we could even give him his dinner and my daughter was in tears. We returned to the hotel and I took the kids up to the room while my husband went to the bar to buy a glass of wine and a beer for the room. He was told again that he couldn't order even a drink at the bar so he would have to sit and wait. He complained to the manager again, who was unaware that we had given up on dinner there (despite her having said she was going to check in on us) and she said to go ahead and serve him. After a terrible nights' sleep on the sofa bed that I shared with our daughter that didn't open flat and was next to a noisy air con unit we packed up everything again and returned to reception. The new manager was now on shift and was confused as to why we were there. There had been no handover and no double queen reserved for us. At this point I was actually crying with frustration and panic that we would be given a sofa to sleep on again. After a long wait he said that there were people in our room but that they were leaving that day and we could then have the room after 4pm. (So the manager the night before was mistaken or outright lying about the room being empty and not clean, they had actually sold the room we booked to someone else!!) We left our cases and started our day late, missing our breakfast reservation and subsequent reservation at the ESB. At lunch time I called the hotel, not trusting that they would be actually preparing the right room for us and was told that there was no record of us moving room that day. After being placed on hold repeatedly and passed from person to person someone then confirmed that actually they were preparing a "premium, premium, premium room" and it would be ready by 4pm. After 4 we returned to the hotel, queued for the cases, queued for reception, queued for the lift and discovered that actually, we finally had the room that I had originally chosen, not a "premium, premium, premium" so that was just more lies. ** I should also point out that all the time we were hoofing 4 cases and 2 kids about, not once were we offered the services of the bell boys who just stood around chatting and ignoring customers ** Before moving to the new room the manager from the night before asked if she could leave a present for us in the room. We discovered later that night a note apologising for a delay at check in (I think 23 hours is more than a delay at check in!!) and a voucher for 4 muffins from the over-priced hotel lobby shop. 4 muffins!!!! For a totally ruined first night!! Anyway, cut to day 3 and I caught the manager and asked when the $100 tax refund and $200 room refund would happen and she denied ever having offered $200 off the room!! I outright said that she was fibbing but she wouldn't deviate from her story, so I am guessing she got told that she shouldn't have offered that and was now back-tracking by denying she had ever said it. She did however confirm that the room swap had been a downgrade so it seems like hotel policy is to call all room changes upgrades when in fact you are not being given what you have paid for!! She agreed that the difference between the cost of the rooms would be adjusted off the bill alongside the $100 tax refund but this did not happen either. We have ended up paying the original bill that we were issued with 6 months ago with no tax refund and no discount for the downgrade. (I would have expected not to have to pay for night one at all considering they ruined it completely and caused so much stress and upset). All in all this place is toxic. From the front desk to the restaurant to the managers, it seems like everyone lies and tries to squirm out of their responsibilities to their guests. For us, this was a once in a lifetime trip to NYC and to lose a whole night to this is unforgivable. They are totally incompetent and worse still, they seem not to care. I would avoid like the plague.

Noisy rooms, great location though We were assigned a room on the 6th floor, and it was clean and well-maintained. However, the beds were quite small — definitely not queen-sized, but rather full-sized — which was a bit of a letdown since we were traveling with two kids. Another downside was the noise level. Even with the windows closed, we could hear a lot of street noise at night, which woke both us and the kids multiple times. That said, the highlight of our stay was the location. It was just a short walk to Central Park, which made exploring the area convenient.
