Clarion, Pennsylvania: Historic Downtown Surrounded by Forests
Nearly 160,000 acres of forest stretch over Pennsylvania’s Clarion County, giving plenty of room to explore the great outdoors with fishing, hiking, and camping. Here’s a tip on where to begin: head to Cook Forest State Park. It’s 1 of the top 50 state parks in the nation, and it’s home to a national nature landmark known as Forest Cathedral. This “structure” takes the form of 300- to 350-year-old white pines and hemlocks that measure more than 3 feet in diameter and nearly 200 feet high. Keep an eye out for bald eagles while you’re there.
With so much foliage, it’s no wonder that Clarion, the county seat, hosts an annual Autumn Leaf Festival. Attendees can look at the fall colors between carnival rides and concerts, then collect the festival’s trademark glasses. There’s reason to explore downtown in any season, however, since you can visit the historic Clarion County Courthouse and Jail. The courthouse, completed in 1883, stands more than three and a half stories tall.
