Hotel at a Glance: Peninsula Island Resort

The easiest way to get to the Gulf of Mexico from this luxurious resort is to walk outside—the property sits on a private stretch of sun-kissed beachfront along the water. Nearly everything at this resort revolves around the gulf, from the restaurant’s Mexican-inspired fresh seafood to the sparkling outdoor pool that looks out on the shore.

  • Beachfront dining: At Las Olas Restaurant Grill and Bar, chefs use locally sourced ingredients to craft mouthwatering international dishes. Order a bottle of wine and take in the views of the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Brazilian furnishings and private balconies give a luxe feel to the studios, apartments, and suites. The biggest of suites boasts three bedrooms, a living room, multiple TVs, and a fully equipped kitchen with a dining area for eight.
  • Onsite fitness center with cardio machines and free weights
  • Added perk: All of this Getaway’s options include a daily breakfast for two at the onsite restaurant.

South Padre Island, Texas: Vibrant Marine Life and Educational Centers

South Padre Island isn’t actually an independent island—it’s the name given to the resort town on the southernmost point of Texas’s much larger Padre Island, which stretches nearly 130 miles along the Gulf of Mexico. The town is linked to mainland Texas by a single bridge, the Queen Isabella Causeway. Because it occupies such a narrow stretch of land—at its broadest point, South Padre Island is only a few blocks wide—getting from the Gulf on the east side to Laguna Madre on the other takes only about 10 minutes on foot. Many visitors spend their vacations laying out on the area’s sandy beaches, which are home to more than 300 types of waterfowl, lofty sand dunes, and the occasional kemp’s ridley sea turtle. Others set sail on fishing charters to seek out swordfish, redfish, and spotted seatrout.

On the northern end of South Padre Island at Sea Turtle, Inc., you can observe endangered kemp’s ridley sea turtles, which the organization rescues, rehabilitates, and releases at nearby beaches. Ila Fox Loetscher, affectionately known as “The Turtle Lady,” founded the nonprofit organization in 1977 after spending more than 10 years rehabilitating sea turtles in her South Padre Island home.

SUBPAR for even a hotel! Definitely NOT a Resort and SPA!! This was the worst experience I've ever had for a short family vacation. It clams it's a resort and spa, but gives you the service of a Motel 6 (sorry if I'm insulting Motel 6-I can only imagine it had to be much better). First, what kind of "resort" still uses double Full size beds? After we checked in and went to our room, we noticed the Main lamp didn't work, and the TV had no signal, so we had to call for maint right away and they took a long time to figure out how to get the TV working. By the next day, the TV lost connect again, and we didn't bother calling them again. We had 2 adults and 2 kids, and they only provided 3 towels. And they were always out. The day we arrived, they didn't have any Pool side towels available at all. So, we went to the pool, and what I think are supposed to be 2 jacuzzis/hot tubs, are ALL regular pool water, NOT heated. Buttons missing from where I think used to be the area to turn on the jets. So, no heat and no jets in either hot tub. The next day at the pool, you could only have 2 pool towels, and you had to turn them in by 10pm or they would charge you for them. When they cleaned our room in the afternoon, the maid service didn't have any towels on the carts. They had to bring them later since none were ready when they started cleaning rounds. So, you had to wait to shower before dinner for towels. And we asked for extra towels, since we really needed AT LEAST 4, but they DID NOT have any extras. >>>>When we asked the "Manager" about more towels for the room or towels for the pool, she said she didn't have any available and was thinking to stop providing towels for the pools since it was such an issue having them for the resort guest, and told me to bring my own towels!! >>> I was shocked. The pull out sofa was not very big, and the bottom part that pulls out didn't connect with the sofa, and it would move and split in the middle. I can't believe my 9yr old was able to manage to sleep on it since we put the chairs of the room to block it from moving apart. Luckily they were able to send up another set of sheets and a blanket for the pull out sofa bed at least. They do provide golf cart or laundry cart to help you move your things from the parking lot that is VERY FAR from the hotel. The bathroom was upgraded recently and LOOKS nice, but in our room, the shower drain didn't drain very well, and drains super slowly. Water starts making a pool by your feet of a couple of inches. All the walls, and hallways are very dirty and left without maintenance for years. AC units was rusted through on the outside. NO AC in the elevator, and very slow. *****THE MOST SHOCKING THING *****When I complained about the service, the lady manager said to us IN SPANISH that if we didn't like it WE COULD CALL HER PAPI, because it's his property. She wasn't in the least apologetic about the poor service, or condition of the hotel. And kept mumbling stuff in Spanish as i walked out the door. VERY Spoiled little lady and obviously has NO business running a hotel or working in customer service industry. Do yourself a favor and DON'T waste your money supporting this establishment.

Possibly The Worst Hotel I've Ever Seen. This place has the nerve to call itself a resort???  It's more like a multi-floor cheap motel.  Don't be fooled by the beautiful photos, this property is a DUMP.  They put us on the 4th floor.  Once we took the nasty, dirty elevator up, we were to enter this "mystery door" that led to another hallway, to get to our room.  VERY SCARY!   At the onset, we knew we wouldn't like it here -- the unsecured parking lot is about a quarter mile from check-in.  The unloading area is gravel and dirt, but it had been raining, so it was a muddy, gravely mess!  After bickering to get a refund (which we didn't), and calling and reporting all this to booking.com, we opted to stay at La Quinta Inn which was MUCH nicer, and we'll stay there again.  We never gave the room a chance at Peninsula.  We couldn't wait to get outta there, even tho we suffered the monetary loss.  Truly HORRIBLE!!
