Beyond the Las Vegas Strip: Old Vegas and Red Rock Canyon

It can feel like the entire city of Las Vegas revolves around the Strip if you never venture beyond that neon-lit corridor. But there’s plenty to see and do once you step off Las Vegas Boulevard. You can find a taste of Old Vegas on Fremont Street, where vintage signs and showgirls crowned with headdresses recall the days of Sinatra and Martin. Beginning at dusk, a canopy of more than 12 million LED lights erupts in a psychedelic light-and-music show every hour. For an aerial view, zoom down the center of Fremont Street on a zipline.

Nature puts on its own show at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, a landscape of fiery-red sandstone formations and limestone cliffs just 17 miles outside the city. Motor down the 13-mile scenic drive or ditch the car and strike out on any of more than 20 hiking trails that course through the region’s otherworldly topography.

What to expect I stayed in the south tower. Was not expecting to hear Fremont street up on the 21st floor. Crazy but I slept well. The bed was nice and comfortable and clean. The room doors only had locks from the inside to secure the room. No door latch locks. And a maid had entered my room while I was unpacking which startled me. I also had an adjoining room door with a lock that looked pretty easy to get by. Also aske 3 times for a do not disturb sign and never got on. One custodian told me that they dont give them out. Yet my friends in the north tower did have them. Definitely bring you own room security devices from home but I honestly did feel safe in the room. I could hear Fremont but once 2am hit it got quiet. The toilet paper definitely could have been better quality. It was great to stay but I felt like I would have had better amenities and a quieter time on the strip. The plaza is right in front of Fremont and all my friends rooms could hear the music in there rooms as well. Would i stay again? It honestly depends on the situation. The convention was there in the plaza and so that was convenient so its a maybe.

Not great but ok at best To start, we haven't been to Las vegas in 25 years. How things have changed. First time staying up in the Fremont St area. Definitely won't be staying again. The hotel was good. Staff was great. Room was clean. Didn't realize how noisy it was. Music going on till 2:AM. It was so loud. Also didn't realize smoking was aloud inside the casinos.
