Camden, Maine: 19th-Century Charm on Sparkling Penobscot Bay

Ever since the first six-masted schooner was built here, in 1900, Camden has been known as a center for boating. From the many hills that look out to Penobscot Bay, you can see windjammers and kayaks cruising about the harbor, and the spires of century-old churches looming over downtown. Historical buildings abound here: You can dine at European-style bistros and pick up souvenirs in boutiques set in brownstone buildings that date back to the 19th century. Along the waterfront, colorful wooden buildings house restaurants and lobster joints that serve fresh-caught Maine lobster and rock crab.

The inland is just as beautiful as the coast. Trees on Camden’s hills bloom bright green in warm months and blaze red and gold during the fall. A few miles west of the water, you can hike the rolling trails of Camden Hills State Park to the top of Mount Battie for views that extend all the way to Penobscot Bay.

Great accommodations in a quiet setting. Beautiful cabins and perfect for a family with extra friends along for vacation. Enjoyed the peace and quiet and the walking/hiking trails. Also was great to be able to bring our dog and she loved it there.

First visit to Maine, won't be our last! We have always wanted to visit Maine, this year we took the plunge. My sister worked for MBNA and came to Point Lookout in the early 2000's for a management conference. We looked online and found that the resort is open and renting the cabins. What a delightful experience, from the excellent customer service to the no contact check in, we could not have more pleased. The cabin was perfect for out week stay. Roomy and comfortable fit our needs perfectly. We had fun exploring all the great small towns along the way on Rt 1 and ate some delicious lobster and seafood along the way. The fire pits and grills outside of every cabin was a nice feature and we had several bonfires during our week stay.We will definitely be back and look forward to many more vacations in Maine!

Wonderful woodland cabins We traveled to Maine to meet family. My parents, children and husband and I stayed in a 3 bedroom cabin, while my extended family stayed in a 2 bedroom cabin. The three bedroom cabin is MUCH larger than the 2 bedroom cabin, so it was our primary spot for meals. The beds were very coMfortable, and the linens were great quality. The roll away bed was especially helpful for us. We loved the supply of toiletries and towels. Our only issue with sleeping was that there is no noise insulation (sheet rock) between floors, since they are wood plank floors. It can be very loud if you have an active person from your group sleeping in the second floor bedroom. The larger cabin only supplies 4 chairs in the living room, so we used our camp chairs for everyone else to sit around and talk at night. There was a nice flat screen tv for a rainy day movie, where we streamed Netflix and disney plus. The kitchen has basic necessities, which was difficult for 12 people to eat meals with. But there are plenty of dishes for 8 people! Only 2 serving bowls, a couple pots and one frying pan. We brought our own lobster pot, which worked out nicely. They supply some coffee, tea, filters, and sweeteners to get you started, as well as salt and pepper. There was a small bottle of dish soap, paper towel roll, a dish towel and some pot holders as well. It is a beautiful place. The cabins are pretty private, very clean, nicely appointed and surrounded by beautiful forest, but connected with well lit paths. Each one has a small charcoal grill, a fire pit, wood, and a screened in porch. We loved sitting around the fire pit together. There are great hiking trails, a gym and a soccer stadium on property. But the jewel of the property is the beach. We have been to many beaches in maine… MANY, and this is by far the nicest! Unfortunately, i think they are turning ownership over to the town soon. Hopefully people will still be able to enjoy it. We would absolutely return to this site. It would be perfect for a family reunion trip. Especially since it is in between two cute towns (Camden and Belfast), and an easy day trip to acadia.
