Cabarete, Dominican Republic: Windsurfing, Kiteboarding, and Diverse Wildlife

Cabarete was just a quiet beach town on the northeast corner of the Dominican Republic until the late 1980s, when Cabarete’s first tourists began to arrive. These travelers were windsurfers, who flocked to the area for its ideal wind and wave conditions. Today, Cabarete routinely hosts professional and amateur windsurfing competitions, and the laid-back village is often hailed as the country’s capital of both kiteboarding and windsurfing. You can show off your chops or sign up for a lesson at Kite Beach.

If you prefer traditional surfing, there’s El Encuentro Beach. An offshore reef near the entrance to the bay is a popular site for scuba-diving and snorkeling, too. For land adventures, visit the El Choco National Park for hiking, biking, or exploring underground caves. The park is also home to a rich ecosystem of animal and plant life, including one of the smallest hummingbirds in the world.

Location, location, location! We love Cabarete! Presidential Suites in Cabarete was the perfect place for my family to stay. The location is excellent. The buildings are right in central Cabarete, which means you are right on or across the street from the beach. We stayed across the street, and the pools are fabulous. My kids and I thoroughly enjoyed pool hopping throughout the week. There are lots of comfy cabanas, chairs, and lounges around all the pool areas. The pools were kept pretty clean with staff tending to them every morning. There is also a pool right on the beach. I spent lots of time gazing at the ocean while lounging in the very warm pool water! Priceless! There is a bar and restaurant right there, but we didn't spend much time there. It was a little pricy compared to what you can get if you walk a few minutes down the street or beach...lots of restaurants right on the beach where you could get a few rounds of drinks for the price of one at the resort. The rooms are great; you are not living in complete luxury (at least on the pool side), but they are very spacious with great balconies, tile floors, and lots of closet space. The beds were firm, which I prefer, and the air conditioning worked extremely well; at times we were cold in room (which I love), but there are remote controls for each unit (in each room!) There was a full kitchen stocked with the essentials for cooking, including coffee maker and blender. Now we know to bring a travel size dish soap, hand soap, and sponge. The showers were great, but they didn't have full doors, and a slow drain led to overflowing onto the bathroom floor every night. We just piled our towels there as we showered, and they were replaced daily. (I had read another review here about there being a charge for towels...we came through RCI - had to pay a 50 a day resort fee which covered towels and room cleaning, I guess.) Wifi signal worked well. The staff was very friendly. Security stood watch at the entrance, and they would often act as crossing guards when we would cross the BUSY street to the beach. Isaac was so sweet at check in and check out, and because we were there with RCI, we have to give the highest compliments to Anna and Gary. RCI has perks like water, coffee, juice for kids at bar, ice and Anna and Gary were so friendly and kind. We felt truly cared for, and if we needed anything, Anna and Gary were there for us. We look forward to coordinating with them on our next trip to visit sister resort in Puerto Plata. We will be coming back to this lovely property (possibly next year). For travelers on a budget, you can really experience great culture, food, drinks, and entertainment for reasonable prices in Cabarete, and this is a wonderful place to make your home base, as it is super close to grocery (Janets has anything you need), pharmacy, charming Cabarete beach, probably walking distance to 30 restaurants (at least), and a reasonable driving distance from super fun adventures, like Ocean World in Puerto Plata, Monkey Jungle in Sosua, the luscious shores of Playa Grande and Playa Caleton. I am praying that Presidential Suites sticks with RCI... we will be returning!

Great 3BR Unit Poolfront with Beach View, Terrible, Non-Responsive Service 6 of us. Really disappointed with the staff responsiveness, even if nice unit. Had to consistently request service three times with escalating displeasure before anything got addressed. $25 for each housekeeping service. Stingy on towels and toilet paper. Expensive drinks double the price compared to off-resort down the beach. Day 1: sliding glass door lock broken, so we couldn’t secure unit - finally addressed after 3rd request Sunday morning. Day 2: 2nd bathroom shower floor unlevel, flowing into bathroom - said they’d bring us replacement bathmat and beach towel, but no-showed, then on 3rd attempt said they’d only replace towels once per week without fee, which we didn’t want to waste til midweek housekeeping. Discovered we had no extra trash bags either. Day 3: Catamaran tour off-resort, then St Patricks Bay bar crawl, so out of unit and happy, but bath towels getting progressively dirty. Day 4: 2 rooms ran out of TP (no 2nd rolls in any BRs). 3 requests went unanswered, then housekeeping closed at 5pm, so had to buy at local market. Sand and dirt accumulating, so paid and scheduled housekeeping for Day 5. Day 5 (Today): It’s 4 o’clock, towels piled on floor for easy counting, beer and water bottles, trash and sand everywhere despite our best efforts. Just made 3rd trip to Reception to say we want to shower and go to eat, drink and be merry -closed with Now, Vaminos! Day 6, 7, and 8: To be continued - should we tell them bedroom doors are swollen and won’t close? Otherwise, having a great time in Cabarete…because it’s awesome ✌️ We’d

This place has its ups and downs but more ups then downs This place definitely has its ups and downs, but overall, I’d say it’s worth checking out! This hotel is just a hop away from some fantastic bars and restaurants. The hotel itself is made up of about five buildings. One of them, the Imperial Suites, which is located right on the beach, while the others sit across a very busy street. Just a heads-up: if you end up with a street-facing room, it can get a bit noisy since it’s on a busy road. Now, the rooms? Absolutely gorgeous and spacious! We had a single room, but our friends were in one of the three-bedroom units, and wow, it was stunning—complete with a full kitchen and three separate bathrooms. Perfect for a larger group! There are three restaurants in the hotel, each offering stunning ocean views. Seriously, the grounds are immaculate; you can tell they take pride in keeping everything clean and well-maintained. They offer all inclusive but honestly it’s not worth the money. There are too many delicious and inexpensive restaurants just a few feet away. A couple of quirks to keep in mind: there’s no daily room service included, and if you want your room cleaned, they’ll charge you an extra $15. When we checked in, we received two towels, two beach towels, and two hand towels. But if you need more, it’s an extra $5, and you have to return the old ones first. They’re pretty strict about towel accountability—no towel, no checkout! Oh, and don’t lose your room key or the bracelet they give you; they’ll charge you for that too. But on the bright side, we ordered room service during our stay, and it was delicious! All things considered. The cleanliness, beautiful rooms, and prime location make it a solid choice, even with a few extra fees here and there.
