Resort at a Glance: Purple Parrot Resort in Perdido Key

Many who come to the Pensacola area gravitate toward Pensacola Beach, but it’s nearby Perdido Key that earned a spot on Coastal Living magazine’s list of the best beach vacations. The renowned Dr. Beach also singled out Perdido Key for having some of “the best swimming beaches in the country.” Purple Parrot Resort put its guests within easy reach of these beaches—it’s 1 mile from Johnson Beach and 2 miles from Perdido Key State Park—and helps them shift into the tropical lifestyle with a palm tree-lined outdoor pool.

  • Where you’ll stay: One-bedroom condos offer amenities that vary from unit to unit, but many come with balconies, full kitchens, and flat-screen TVs.
  • Not your average pool: The outdoor pool has a waterfall cave, and there’s an island hot tub accessible by bridge.
  • Stay inside: If the weather doesn’t cooperate, you can spend time in the indoor pool complex, which includes a sauna.
  • Other things to do: Golf at one of the nearby courses, play beach volleyball, or explore the historical attractions of Pensacola.

Perdido Key, Florida: Barrier Islands Just South of Pensacola

If you’re heading north up the Florida Gulf Coast, Perdido Key is the last stop before Alabama. This barrier island rivals any other part of the Panhandle for its scenic beauty and recreational opportunities, starting with the white sand dunes of Perdido Key State Park and Johnson Beach. Swimming, surfing, and fishing are popular pursuits, and the park’s environmentally protected status make it a hot spot for birds and other coastal animals, including ospreys and herons.

A short drive east brings you to Gulf Islands National Seashore, whose protected beaches tend to be relatively uncrowded. (They’re off the beaten path and offer fewer amenities than the Perdido Key’s other sands.) While you’re here, check out the circa-1830s Fort Pickens, one of only four forts in the South never occupied by Confederate troops.

Just ok. We stayed in 18C. The condo itself was mostly clean until I put my bag on the bottom shelf of the nightstand. I pulled my bag out and noticed fuzz balls on it. I looked behind the stand and bed and it was very dirty. All it takes is a swifter to clean that. I was looking forward to the indoor pool. The water was very cold. The pool guy came in to do his thing. I asked what the pool temperature was and he said he did not know. Seriously? He said the thermostat was broke and someone would be there to fix it. I think this was just to passify me. He cleaned a filter from the closet and turned on the hot tub. I never saw him test the water or add chemicals. We stayed a week and the pool was never fixed. The resort looks a little run down. I never saw anyone taking care of the grounds while we were there. Maybe in the summer it may be different. It is about a quarter mile to the beach. It is a ok resort, the outdoor pool is large and three feet deep. It would be ok for the kids.

Mold ALL over the pool area Pool area is full of mold....how is it safe for rhe public!!??!! The waterfall rocks have mold on them and the water flows over into the pool. The bridge leading to the hot tub has mild growing underneath thats visible when you swim underneath it. The sides of the pool have mold underneath the edges. This pool needs to be shut down until the resort management hires a professional team to clean it free of the mold. It's a safety hazzard especially for kids....yuck!!!!!

Girls trip The purple parent is absolutely wonderful. Met a lot of different people and enjoyed our time very much. Hated it to leave. The pool was absolutely wonderful, however it was really too cold. The hot tub was too hot but all in all it was a wonderful vacation for us for girls and we definitely will return.
