Chicago's South Loop: Historic Downtown Neighborhood near World-Class Museums and Lake Michigan

A cultural renaissance in recent years has seen Chicago's South Loop turn into one of the city's most vibrant residential and industrial centers. The downtown neighborhood is bordered on the north by Printer's Row, a two-block stretch along Dearborn Street once known as the printing capital of the Midwest. Here you'll find some of the buildings that made Chicago one of the world's leaders in architecture in the 1880s and '90s—a title it's held ever since.

To the east lie Lake Michigan and the Museum Campus, a 57-acre lakefront park home to the city's trio of natural sciences museums. The Field Museum houses more than 21 million artifacts, including its most famous resident, Sue, the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus rex fossil ever unearthed. Bullfrogs, beluga whales, and moon jellies dwell at Shedd Aquarium, and stargazers will want to make a stop at Adler Planetarium. You don't have to limit yourself to the Loop during your trip; check out our guide to Chicago public transportation for tips on navigating it like a local.

Not As Nice As It Used To Be I am sad because this hotel is not what it used to be. We have stayed here many times over the years, one or two nights at a time between Amtrak sleeper trains, and have come to rely on it for our travels. We really enjoy the balconies for the fresh air off the lake after being in a train compartment overnight! But something has changed in their management and I think I will be looking for a new hotel in Chicago. The great views and fresh air from the balconies are still there, and the restaurant off the lobby is better than ever, but the room itself was rather dusty, the bathroom amenities are not congruent with the price point, and the refrigerator in the room has been replaced by a completely-stuffed-full minibar which is definitely not going to hold your medication or other personal things. They have a sign saying you can request another fridge if you need one, but electrical outlets are an issue. Also, with the minibar cabinet built onto the top of the fridge, the coffee maker on top of that was out of my reach. So I am pretty sad about that. But if you are tall and don't need a fridge then this might be a good place for you.

Radisson Blu Chicago to the Rescue After a horrible travel day with two airline cancellations and a hotel that reneged on their reservation by the airport, I was stuck at 3am scrambling to find an overnight room. Jordan was manager on duty at Radisson Blu Chicago and not only accommodated my request for a room after calling several other properties, but he also waited personally for my arrival before performing his nightly administrative closing activities to fit me in. The room was clean, reasonably priced, and he gave me a late checkout as well. I highly recommend the Radisson Blu and shout out to Jordan and the team for creating a positive experience where a comedy of other major brands had faltered over the course of the day when a customer was most vulnerable.

Location yes; service no. Prior reviews are accurate: The service is poor. Despite affirmatively requesting a room clean at the front desk our room was not cleaned upon return to the hotel daily. When it was it was a ten minute remake of beds, no actual cleaning. Not enough towels provided despite requests. Spoke to manager and he had no explanations; just said he would ‘speak with housekeeping’ which was clearly ineffective. Doors close extremely loudly in hallway starting around 5am. No towels at pool. Had to request. Mini fridge full of items to purchase with a sign that says do not use for personal items. The fridge use is a better amenity than the overpriced items contained therein! Location is good, ambiance of lobby is good.
