Chicago's South Loop: Historic Downtown Neighborhood near World-Class Museums and Lake Michigan

A cultural renaissance in recent years has seen Chicago's South Loop turn into one of the city's most vibrant residential and industrial centers. The downtown neighborhood is bordered on the north by Printer's Row, a two-block stretch along Dearborn Street once known as the printing capital of the Midwest. Here you'll find some of the buildings that made Chicago one of the world's leaders in architecture in the 1880s and '90s—a title it's held ever since.

To the east lie Lake Michigan and the Museum Campus, a 57-acre lakefront park home to the city's trio of natural sciences museums. The Field Museum houses more than 21 million artifacts, including its most famous resident, Sue, the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus rex fossil ever unearthed. Bullfrogs, beluga whales, and moon jellies dwell at Shedd Aquarium, and stargazers will want to make a stop at Adler Planetarium. You don't have to limit yourself to the Loop during your trip; check out our guide to Chicago public transportation for tips on navigating it like a local.

Excellent location! Easy access to Milennium Park, the Riverwalk, Miracle Mile, and great restaurants. The hotel feels safe and the rooms are spacious. Breakfast in the hotel restaurant was very good, and outdoor seating made the experience even better. Highly recommend!

Please train your employees better! After a disappointing experience at another 4-star hotel in the city, we decided to check out the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel in order to book a reservation for the remaining days of our trip to Chicago. At the hotel front desk, we made a simple request to see a room (any room!) before going ahead with our booking. Sure, there are pictures on the website, but pictures do not convey the smell, nor the current state of the premises. So, we felt that briefly seeing a room in person would prevent another disappointing experience. Well, little did we know the extent of the rudeness and lack of cooperation we were about to be met with by the front-desk manager! Basically, she firmly denied showing us a room, and proceeded to list every possible excuse she could find to justify her lack of cooperation when it came to what should have been a perfectly reasonable request. Needless to say, we took our business to another high-end hotel nearby, but we are still taken aback by the lack of professional customer service we received at the Radisson. Please train your front-desk managers better!

Great view! Dirty room! I never leave reviews, but I felt compelled to share my experience after staying at the Radisson Blu Aqua in Chicago. The location and views are beautiful — and that's about where the positives end. This was a 3-day weekend getaway for my husband and me. If it hadn’t been such a busy weekend, we would have gone elsewhere. The hotel room was not clean — we found blonde and brown hairs on the floor (we both have black hair), crumbs scattered around, and overall, the room just felt dirty. I asked for towels two days in a row and only received them the day we were checking out. On top of that, the towels were old, rough, and felt like drying off with a rug. To make matters worse, when they checked me out, they didn’t even ask how my stay was — which says a lot about their customer service. This hotel feels more like a 2.5-star property, definitely not worth the price. I noticed many reviews complaining about the cleanliness before booking — I really wish I had listened and stayed elsewhere. Unfortunately, it’s not worth the money.

Good business trip Here for a conference. Amenities were lovely and I enjoyed my room and view. It’s kinda far from the train comparatively. The walls are also kinda thin so you will hear anyone and everyone getting off the elevator. Staff were kind and ultimately not a bad stay.
