Chicago's South Loop: Historic Downtown Neighborhood near World-Class Museums and Lake Michigan

A cultural renaissance in recent years has seen Chicago's South Loop turn into one of the city's most vibrant residential and industrial centers. The downtown neighborhood is bordered on the north by Printer's Row, a two-block stretch along Dearborn Street once known as the printing capital of the Midwest. Here you'll find some of the buildings that made Chicago one of the world's leaders in architecture in the 1880s and '90s—a title it's held ever since.

To the east lie Lake Michigan and the Museum Campus, a 57-acre lakefront park home to the city's trio of natural sciences museums. The Field Museum houses more than 21 million artifacts, including its most famous resident, Sue, the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus rex fossil ever unearthed. Bullfrogs, beluga whales, and moon jellies dwell at Shedd Aquarium, and stargazers will want to make a stop at Adler Planetarium. You don't have to limit yourself to the Loop during your trip; check out our guide to Chicago public transportation for tips on navigating it like a local.

High end hotel with great location and amenities (on paper) plagued by lack of guest services & front-of-house staffing! Incredible busy lobby. Friendly customer-facing staff handled the lines admirably until I was checked into my room when all assistance from staff abruptly ceased. Cards issued at front desk stopped working after dropping off bags in room. Got locked out and had to return to lobby and re-enter long queue. New card issued worked but then second card mysteriously stopped working as well. Concierge and guest service lines went unanswered for 15+ minutes so I hung up. Called again later and left a message about desire to refrigerate perishables in my room (strongly worded mini bar policy advised that use of refrigerator in room would result in mini bar restocking charges if “sensors” detected that items had been “moved” regardless of whether items were taken or consumed) but received no response…at all. Staff at 221 Blu were lovely and accommodating, especially Milos.

Overpriced for what you get Stayed here for four nights in July 2025 to celebrate our 10 year anniversary (and got engaged on this trip). I realized days before our trip that I wouldn't have enough contact lenses for the weekend, so I called the hotel to see if I could get a package delivered there and asked if there were any special instructions I should include. They told me I just needed to put my name and their address and hung up before I was done asking my questions. The day the package was scheduled to arrive, I notified the front desk and asked if I needed to be around to receive it. They said no, just stop by later to pick it up. The package said it was delivered to the front desk so I stopped by to pick it up. They did not have it and contacted their security. I was assured the package would be brought up to my room momentarily. It was not. The next day I went to the front desk and asked again. They spent about 30 minutes trying to get a hold of their mail and security people. They said they didn't have it and I would need to file a claim with UPS (which I could not do as UPS had proof of delivery to the front desk of the Raddison). I stopped by later to try another front desk person. He said to check with the condos next door. They did not have it either. I don't understand how my package could have gotten lost in the few hours that passed between delivery and me checking the front desk, especially being that I had given them two notices that it would be arriving that day. The entire time I was being treated like I was the issue, not that them losing my contacts was the issue. The hotel seems woefully understaffed. There was always a very long line at the front desk, so any inquiry easily took 20 minutes. I had called about amenity packages prior to our stay given the special occasion, and was told to call back when the right person was working - both times I called I was put on hold for several minutes and was hung up on abruptly. It is the kind of place where anything you ask for feels like a burden. This wouldn't typically bother me, but given the price we paid to stay here, I expected better service. The pool is smaller than it looks in the pictures and is very crowded as it's shared with the condos in the building. There were no pool towels left so you had to bring them from your room. There is a mini fridge in the room but you can't put personal items in it, so you have to request a separate mini fridge to be delivered to your room if you have leftovers (which also takes a very long time). The stay didn't ruin our trip, but definitely put a damper on it. We were excited to stay in this building as we are fans of the architect who designed it. It was a bummer the interior experience was such a let down.
