Columbus, Ohio: OSU, Acclaimed Museums, and One of the Country’s Best Zoos

In 2012, Columbus made Business Week’s list of America’s 50 best cities, thanks in part to the city’s best-known institution—The Ohio State University. Though the school contributes a youthful air and helps drive urban progress, Ohio’s capital is much more than a college town. In the walkable downtown you’ll find trendy restaurants and bars as well as a groundbreaking interactive science museum, COSI, and the highly acclaimed Columbus Museum of Art. The Scioto River bisects the city, flowing past public parks and miles of walking and biking paths. A 20-minute drive north will take you to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, one of the finest institutions of its kind, perhaps best known for its affiliation with director emeritus Jack Hanna.

Reasonable price, reasonably clean, reasonable breakfast Title says most of it. The lobby/bar/parking lot got a little loud/rowdy Saturday night. My daughter described it as a circus and refused to go back to the lobby for anything the rest of the night. Not exactly family friendly. There was pounding bass Saturday night, made it hard to sleep. Food was reasonable but the selections were more limited as the weekend went on. Tables less clean as well. The AC unit was VERY loud and cycled off and on all night.

Dirty and lack of care We stayed here due to the proximity to a wedding we were attending. We stayed in a room with two queen beds, The beds were comfortable, but the carpet was stained and dirty, there were water stains and rust on the ceiling, The shower worked well, but for a room with three adults we only had two bath towels and the soap and shampoo were tiny and unimpressive. The breakfast was nothing to get excited about. They have one waffle machine, but ran out of waffle batter. They had coffee but it looked liked it had been made very early and had been sitting for a while. Lastly they were understaffed. The front desk clerk had to care to the breakfast bar as well and was too busy to do either job well. I did feel sorry for him.

Smoke-filled and dirty I stayed there for two nights. Took my daughter for a trip for her 20th birthday. I planned a lot of events so was looking for a reasonable hotel. Ramada has always been decent in the past. The outside appearance and reception area were about the same as the photos. The area (location) was decent and there was plenty of parking for free. Check-in went fine and the staff were ok. Then we walked down the hallway. Everything smelled like an ashtray. The walls were filthy and stained. The safety lock on our door was missing. The room was filthy. There was hair on the bathroom wall and tub and also an old Cheerio on the floor right by the doorway. There were stains everywhere, the shower curtain, walls, regular curtains, sheets. There was something that looked like feces on the wall between the bed and the wall. There were cigarette holes in the chair, the sheets, the curtains and the carpet and it smelled like smoke even though it was a non-smoking room. We didn't dare try the food or use the shower while we were there. We had a great trip overall but I will be letting my daughter pick the hotel next time as this was a HUGE fail.
