Waterloo, Iowa: Artifacts and Agriculture in Midwest Town
In 1932, prominent Waterloo citizen Henry Whittemore Grout left his collection of over 2,000 historical artifacts in the charge of town trustees. Thus the Grout Museum District was born. It's now home to five museums, including the newly added Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veterans Museum, which pays homage to Hawkeye State service members who've defended the country from the Civil War to the present.
Other attractions worth visiting in town include the National Cattle Congress, site of an annual 100-year-old fair showcasing cows from all over the country. During the rest of the year, the facility hosts special events such as car shows, circuses, roller derbies, and rodeo-style competitions.
