St. Catharines, Ontario: Lakeside City near Wineries and Niagara Falls

The city of St. Catharines sits on a harbor between Lake Ontario and Niagara Falls. You’ll find galleries, restaurants, and boutiques along the city’s pier, which is bookended by two lighthouses dating back to the 19th century. At the pier’s Lakeside Park, you can ride a carousel that dates back to 1905. For a more adult-oriented day out, visit some local wineries—the area around St. Catharines is a globally recognized cool-climate region for winemaking, producing top-notch rieslings, chardonnays, and pinot noirs.

Niagara Falls straddles the Canada-U.S. border about 15 miles east of St. Catharines. The Canadian side of the Niagara River is considered the finest vantage point for taking in all three of Niagara Falls’ photogenic brinks: American, Bridal Veil, and Horseshoe Falls.

When booking our stay I read many poor reviews, I was pleasantly surprised with my accommodations. The hotel was nice and it was clean, the staff was great. The restaurant was fantastic food was very good and the waitresses were very friendly. Definitely would go back and I definitely would recommend this hotel.

Rude front desk Front desk lady with light brownish hair in ponytail w/ glasses. Was very sarcastic, rude and poor demeanor. Front desk did not greet me when I entered room was not ready lady said she would call when ready which she didn’t. She seems miserable! At check out the other big blonde w/glasses ignored me until I said hello I’m here for check out! I wonder if this treatment was b/c of my skin color?! Room was spacious & dark needs more lighting, balcony good view of marina water, balcony door needs to be cleaned. Pool was not available, no restaurant, lobby so basic not welcoming, and no hotel sign.

Five star pricing for two star accommodation My wife and I booked one night at the Ramada for a wedding on the Friday. We were given a receipt for $450 for the night which we thought was high but was standard for that area on short notice. (Screenshot provided below) She inquired about booking an extra night (Thursday) which the lady on the phone told her it would cost an additional $170. Since she could work from the hotel on the Friday it made sense and we booked it. We were disappointed the pool was closed and seemed like it had floating film on it. Everything was very typical for a 3 star accommodation. Standing on the shower curtain taking a shower, painted wallpaper and a look like it hasn't been improved since the 80's. We paid upon arrival without being given a balance and when we got home we were given a bill for over $1000! For two nights at a glorified 2 star accommodation. Who would pay that kind of price for crack house chic???

I have travelled the world and this is the worst hotel experience ever A group of us had pre booked several rooms for a nearby wedding the following day. The good…our check in was seamless even arriving early pre check in time. The bad: We were just leaving for our room when another couple had checked in and did not have the confirmed 2 Queen side room and there was no iron or ironing board The couple checking in after us ( not in our group) they had lost their reservation and they had email confirmation the check in clerk apologized and basically sent them on their way with a complimentary stay at a later date Our room was as we had requested but no closet or hanger for our attire (we didn’t need an iron thank gawd) but really no wear to hang your clothes? The toilet paper hanger was far out of reach I had 2 other rooms booked in my name for family arriving the next day. As the wedding was at 4:30 and check in was 4 I requested an early check in for at least one room to be ready for 3pm as they both had long drives and needed one room to be available to get ready. I was told to ask in the morning. The next morning at 9am they confirmed the other 2 room numbers I had booked, even gave me the room numbers and the reservation clerk wrote it down for an early cleaning and I have witnesses who heard and saw her do this. When the first guest arrived at 2:30 they were told the room was not ready until 3…fine as requested. At 3 we go to make sure the room was ready same woman said she had no recollection of the request (remember I have witnesses) and she said it would be ready in 10 minutes 20 minutes later it was still not ready and the 2nd party i had reserved a room for arrived. Now we are scrambling we had to leave by 4 for the wedding. We got them checked in they got ready in other rooms and said all would be good when we came back. Not so the night reservation clerk made me get dressed and come down to verify the check in By this time I was more than upset and said with all this BS you better not charge us if we check out late. Her response: I don’t give a **** what you get charged turned her back walked into the office and closed the door. The hotel is under renovation no restaurant or pool still charging over $300. a night and the staff on the reservation/check in desk are rude and incompetent
