The Northern Beaches of North Carolina's Outer Banks: Idyllic Towns, Sand Dunes, and Wright Brothers History

Dubbed the “East Coast’s recreational playground” by Frommer’s, the Outer Banks is a string of narrow barrier islands that hugs the northern coast of North Carolina. Vacationers have flocked to the islands’ postcard-worthy beaches and idyllic villages since the 18th century. The most northerly island in the Outer Banks, Bodie Island, is home to five such towns, known collectively as the Northern Beaches: Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head.

Head to Kill Devil Hills to see the Wright Brothers National Memorial Park, where a large granite boulder commemorates the spot where the world’s first powered flight took off, in 1903. The memorial also includes replicas of the brothers' early gliders. Just outside the town of Nags Head lie some of the East Coast’s tallest natural sand dunes at Jockey’s Ridge State Park. Strong winds off the ocean constantly reshape the dunes and make the area a popular spot for hang-gliding and flying kites. Make the drive south to Cape Hatteras National Seashore, nicknamed the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” for the many ships that have crashed into its dangerous sandbars during storms. Here, you can catch a glimpse of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, whose iconic exterior is a swirl of black and white stripes.

Best customer service around everyone was so nice. The location was perfect. The room was fine. The bathroom needs a little bit of updating but everything was really nice.

Just okay. Pros: Convenient location. Vending machine/ice dispenser on every level. Cons: Rooms could use updating. Small pool area. Breakfast was mediocre- there were much better options within walking distance.

If you like damp bedding, carpet and towels this place is for you! The hotel is run down, but rooms were clean. Nice balcony room facing ocean was nice to see sunrise and dolphins. It is so damp in the room that our towels, even the fresh ones were damp, the carpet was wet and the bedding was super uncomfortable because of the dampness. I wonder about mold in walls? I could hear my neighbors TV as though I was in the room with them, no privacy! Lastly I don’t recommend the breakfast, way too expensive for blah food. Definitely go out. Would not stay here again.

Not as booked, gross, damp, and loud. I booked what I thought was a nice ocean view dog friendly room. When I arrived, the place looked much more run down than online photos suggested. I checked in only to be informed that only ground level, well below the dunes rooms are dog friendly. They seemed to expect that I'd be grateful they found me one on the ocean side rather than the parking lot one and waived the pet fee ($35) for a room $150 less a night than what I'd booked. The room was dingy and not well kept and smelled rather badly. The outdoor area is a common walkway and bathroom for everyone's dog about 3 feet from your door. You can hear everything in all the other rooms. They would not refund me that night when I tried to just leave but with the help of my credit card company refunded the rest.
