The Northern Beaches of North Carolina's Outer Banks: Idyllic Towns, Sand Dunes, and Wright Brothers History

Dubbed the “East Coast’s recreational playground” by Frommer’s, the Outer Banks is a string of narrow barrier islands that hugs the northern coast of North Carolina. Vacationers have flocked to the islands’ postcard-worthy beaches and idyllic villages since the 18th century. The most northerly island in the Outer Banks, Bodie Island, is home to five such towns, known collectively as the Northern Beaches: Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head.

Head to Kill Devil Hills to see the Wright Brothers National Memorial Park, where a large granite boulder commemorates the spot where the world’s first powered flight took off, in 1903. The memorial also includes replicas of the brothers' early gliders. Just outside the town of Nags Head lie some of the East Coast’s tallest natural sand dunes at Jockey’s Ridge State Park. Strong winds off the ocean constantly reshape the dunes and make the area a popular spot for hang-gliding and flying kites. Make the drive south to Cape Hatteras National Seashore, nicknamed the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” for the many ships that have crashed into its dangerous sandbars during storms. Here, you can catch a glimpse of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, whose iconic exterior is a swirl of black and white stripes.

Perfect Vacation, Wonderful staff! Wonderful experience from check in to check out. We arrived early morning the day of check in, knowing we were early, but just wanted to notify the front desk we had arrived and were making sure everything was in place for our reservation. My husband was greeted by a very lovely front desk receptionist/manager named Ally. (spelling?) She was the sweetest woman and accomodated our every need. I have dealt with the public in my profession for a lifetime and realize how difficult the task of dealing with the public can be. Seeing a woman with a wonderful smile on her face, who took pride in her work was very refreshing!! We don't always see that in service oriented professions these days, so Ally was a breath of fresh air and much appreciated! She accomodated us in a beautiful Ocean View room! Upon arriving in the room, we noticed it to be generally very clean, however, it seemed the cleaning crew missed the toilet. Not a big deal, but upon notifying Ally of the issue, it was cleaned and corrected within MINUTES!! She even gave us a voucher for the breakfast buffet. :) Talk about great customer service! :) In general, the accomodations were very nice, and a very good deal for the price. Nice pool and hot tub, a nice Tiki bar and deck to lounge, overlooking the water. The weather was a little rough a few days, so my husband decided to extend our stay to take in some beach time and good weather. Ally made it possible to stay in the same room, so we didn't have to relocate everything, and that was a very big help. She also worked with us at making the additional days more affordable! We rarely go away and this whole vacation was a complete surprise for me. My husband included numerous additional surprises all week and Ally helped him in pulling them off without my knowledge! She definitely went above and beyond her duties!! Overall, our stay at this hotel was perfect in every way. We couldn't have asked for more, and we're so grateful we had the chance to get away and dealt with such great management! If and hopefully, when, we return to Outer Banks, we will definitely be staying at this hotel!!! No need to even check out other places. Thank you for making our vacation so memorable and wonderful! Cat and James. <3

Acceptable For an Older Hotel We knew this was an older hotel when we booked the rooms. But we were a bit surprised that our clothes just felt damp while in the room. The weather was windy, and we had an oceanfront. Maybe the windows and doors need to be re-sealed, I don't know. But everything felt damp. The staff were all pleasant and helpful with one exception. Breakfast was good.....we ate there 3 mornings. Dinner was OK. We had dinner there Tuesday and Wednesday. Honestly, I was kind of surprised Trip Advisor listed the Tiki # 5 out of 50 on OBX. We just spent three weeks in England and Italy. From standard fish and chips shops to more high end dining each place we ate over there was far superior to the Tiki. I will tell you.......coming from the medical field we just don't do well with flies. There were so many flies that one actually fell in my wifes beer and drown! In addition, there is something about having a piece of pineapple or lime placed on my glass after watching flies landing all over the stuff on the other side of the bar that is less than appetizing. Again, this is us. No one else seemed to mind so we just kept napkins over our glasses. As I stated, all the staff were friendly from the front desk to housekeeping. The one issue I had was on the last night at the bar which caused us to walk out and end up ordering take out. Some overweight, tattooed, local yokel kept running her mouth about tourists, people moving to the area and ruining it, just non-stop disrespectful yapping. My family has lived in So. Fla. since the late 40's so no one has to tell me about how painful it is with overpopulation. We moved two years ago just for that reason. And Pompano Beach North to Cocoa used to look like OBX......but not since the late 60's! The thing is, this lady was rude and loud and annoying. I do not care if she is a local or not......or knows the hostess which she seemed to as they were hugging when she finally left.....one of the employees should have told her to pipe down or leave. Our daughter and her husband are involved in a few different businesses, one of them being a long term lease on a Miami Beach hotel bar. And I can tell you for a fact neither one of them would allow that type of behavior from customers be they friends or not. So that kind of ruined the last night for us. The only reason we ordered take-out from the Tiki is that everywhere within walking distance had people waiting to be seated. So we had to come back and order take-out or I would have no spent another dollar at the Tiki.
