Hershey, Pennsylvania: Chocolate Empire with Amusement Parks, Museum, and Tours

Hershey bills itself as “The Sweetest Place on Earth,” a claim that’s hard to dispute considering the whole town smells like chocolate. The confection empire dates back to 1903, when rags-to-riches entrepreneur Milton Hershey founded the area as a company town for his factory workers. These days, the town features candy-themed amusement parks and museums. At Hersheypark®, you can ride 13 roller coasters and float in inner tubes down a lazy river. Next door, the Hershey’s Chocolate World trolley tour takes passengers to Milton Hershey’s boyhood home and the mansion he built across from his factory.

The area has a few sugar-free attractions as well. The recently opened National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg chronicles the war from both the Southern and Northern perspectives. Robert E. Lee’s pocket Bible and Ulysses S. Grant’s sword belt are among its more than 12,000 artifacts. And about 25 miles south of Hershey, the Amish community of Lancaster County is colored by pastoral farmlands, covered bridges, and horse-drawn buggies.

A lot of potential, needs updating Outdoor areas and grounds were very well maintained. A lot of nice amenities. Arcade, Ping pong, large pools, nice playground for young children. Room: Stayed in family suite. In desperate need of renovation. Wallpaper peeling in multiple spots, stained ceilings in multiple spots likely from past leaks, furniture was in poor shape, dressers damaged but functional. Beds/mattresses clean, large and very comfortable. Overall pretty clean but dirty floor tile grout from years of traffic and doors dirty. Hotel has a ton of potential but in need of updating. Would not return unless rooms renovated.

Good Experience and Excellent Help from Manager Randy We really enjoyed our stay. The room was clean and comfy, and the beds were nice for getting a good night’s sleep. The outdoor pool was a cool spot to relax, and the jacuzzi was definitely the best part. Having the indoor pool open all year was a nice bonus too. We had a couple of small issues, but Randy, the manager, took care of everything right away and made sure we were happy. All in all, it was a good experience, and we’d be glad to stay here again.

Family trip We wanted a hotel not too far from Hersheypark. We opted to stay here. We came with our kids. Had several rooms. One room was decent, but one was not acceptable, so we asked to get another room. They were very nice and gave us another room, but to be honest, it was not the cleanest. The bathrooms were old, but were clean. We'd love to come back, but unless the hotel does some updating, I think we will look for another hotel. The steps to go up to our room, from the outside parking, were all rusty, I was hoping it wouldn't break as we went up and down with our luggage. The pool area was very nice, and the kids enjoyed it immensely, as was the hot tub. The playground area was amazing too for the kids! It's located very near Hersheypark, which is a definite plus and right near a Walmart, which is great, but I wish it would be cleaner and more up to date. It needs some touch ups all over. There was ample parking, no problem there! It would be nice to maybe get a Hershey choc kiss on each bed, something to make it more exciting!
