Hershey, Pennsylvania: Chocolate Empire with Amusement Parks, Museum, and Tours

Hershey bills itself as “The Sweetest Place on Earth,” a claim that’s hard to dispute considering the whole town smells like chocolate. The confection empire dates back to 1903, when rags-to-riches entrepreneur Milton Hershey founded the area as a company town for his factory workers. These days, the town features candy-themed amusement parks and museums. At Hersheypark®, you can ride 13 roller coasters and float in inner tubes down a lazy river. Next door, the Hershey’s Chocolate World trolley tour takes passengers to Milton Hershey’s boyhood home and the mansion he built across from his factory.

The area has a few sugar-free attractions as well. The recently opened National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg chronicles the war from both the Southern and Northern perspectives. Robert E. Lee’s pocket Bible and Ulysses S. Grant’s sword belt are among its more than 12,000 artifacts. And about 25 miles south of Hershey, the Amish community of Lancaster County is colored by pastoral farmlands, covered bridges, and horse-drawn buggies.

Good enough for us Nice enough place overall. Room was clean, bed was comfortable, staff was friendly, and pool was warm. However, it is showing some age with chipped paint in spots and places where wallpaper is starting to peel. The bathroom was fine but small, and not updated either. It’s right off the highway but the driveway is easy to miss. Plenty of places to eat or shop nearby. They have ping pong and a game room. We did not try the restaurant but the menu looked decent. If you’re expecting luxury, go somewhere else, but Red Lion is a good value for the dollar if you just need a decent place to stay near Hershey.

Best Hotel Stay! Are you looking for a place that has a great location, clean, fun, reasonably priced, and great loyalty to its guests, this is where you want to stay! I absolutely love this hotel! The General Manager (GM) went above and beyond to accommodate me as I am going through a very difficult situation. We are local to Harrisburg! I broke my foot in 3 places, dislocated it, AND... Had to have emergency surgery, which meant I couldn't do steps! This meant I couldn't go home. I have been at this hotel since April 6th and most likely will be here for another 3-4 weeks. We spoke with several hotels within the area and they were NOT willing to listen to what happen, the situation this caused, and they were NOT willing to work with me at all. Then we got to Red Lion Hotel and Randy (GM) was amazing. He listened intently, empathized with us, and was willing to help us out for what we thought was going to be short-term, which will be at least a 2 month stay. Randy calls and checks in to see how I am doing, if I need anything, and his staff is just as kind and helpful. Come on, how many other GM's and there staff are doing that for their guests? I have NEVER received the hospitality that I do here! Randy goes above and beyond for his hotel guests! I am so honored to have someone that cares so much about the community and the people within the community, watching over me. There is no where else I would think of staying other than here!
