San Angelo, Texas: Former Wild West Outpost on the Concho River
The Concho River snakes through the Wild West town of San Angelo. Many years ago, the river separated the bordellos and casinos on one side from Fort Concho, a 19th-century outpost built to protect frontier settlements in West Texas. Today the Concho River is flanked by a charming river walk, and the nightlife spots along Historic Concho Avenue have been transformed into trendy boutiques and restaurants. For a taste of the gun-slingin’ frontier life, sign up for a tour of Miss Hattie’s Bordello Museum.
San Angelo is known for being a lush oasis in otherwise dry west Texas. Go for a stroll through San Angelo State Park, which sits on the shores of the O.C. Fisher Lake. The park is a popular spot for fishing and boating, as well as mountain biking, hiking, and horseback riding on more than 50 miles of multipurpose trails. Trailside sights include petroglyphs, fossilized footprints, Texas longhorn cattle, horned lizards, and even buffalo.
