Mountain Lodge near Outdoor Recreation

Three gigantic mountains standing about 8,000 feet tall loom over the southern end of Squaw Valley. Up close, you can see the thick layers of pine trees texturing the Snow King or the steep chutes and stony jump-offs of KT-22, its taller brother. To the west, the rocky façade of Broken Arrow towers over the village. Rising above Red Wolf Lodge at Squaw Valley, each mountain offers a wealth of recreational opportunities to the hikers, cyclists, and skiers who flock to Squaw Valley ski resort.

The hotel’s decor reflects its mountain setting: wolves howl on lampshades, animal silhouettes decorate hallways, and wall art supplies bits of wildlife trivia. Each studio unit and one-bedroom condo features a full kitchen as well as a fireplace in the living room to warm hikers after excursions to nearby Lake Tahoe.

The lodge clubhouse is outfitted with communal couches, a flat-screen television, and a foosball table. Hot tubs and barbecue pits stud the deck surrounding the clubhouse, complementing views of Snow King and KT-22 in the background.

Squaw Valley, California: Olympic Heritage amid Lake Tahoe’s Natural Charm

Host of the 1960 Olympic Winter Games, Squaw Valley relishes its place in international sports history. The Olympic Flame is still ablaze just off Highway 89, and the games’ iconic rings stand atop High Camp. Although outdoor athletics draw in the most tourists, the Village at Squaw Valley’s restaurants, coffee shops, and stores have a pull of their own.

In the summer, visitors can hike the local terrain on foot or borrow one of Red Wolf Lodge's bicycles to hit the Truckee River Bike Trail, which meanders along the idyllic mountain stream. A 25-minute drive south brings travelers to Emerald Bay State Park, home of the Scandinavian-influenced mansion known as Vikingsholm. The path to the house is easy and charming, with mini waterfalls popping up along the hill's edge—but the steep incline back up the trail can leave muscles sore.

In the nearby western railroad town of Truckee, modest taverns rub elbows with trendy boutiques and high-end restaurants. Voted Best Fine Dining and Best Restaurant View in the Truckee/North Tahoe region by Sierra Sun readers, Cottonwood Restaurant & Bar serves grass-fed meat and local microbrews. From Cottonwood’s hilltop location overlooking the city, diners can enjoy their meals on a patio strung with white lights. Just down the road, Jax dishes out comfort fare to a mostly local crowd inside an original 1948 Kullman dining car.
