San Diego, California: Historical Attractions and Electric Nightlife in Southern California

San Diego’s sunny, comfortably warm weather and 70 miles of coastline have long attracted vacationing out-of-towners, but the city’s inland scene is no slouch, either. The Gaslamp Quarter is arguably the trendiest listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The area forms both the historic center of town and a hub of San Diego nightlife, with nearly 100 Victorian-era buildings occupied by high-end boutiques, jewelers, and gourmet restaurants.

A stroll through iconic Balboa Park takes you past 17 separate museums, as well as the world-famous and much beloved San Diego Zoo. There’s also the vibrant Spanish Village Art Center, a living gallery where local artists produce pottery, handblown glass, and oil paintings for sale.

Farther north, in Old Town—site of the first European settlement in California—shops in Mission-style stucco buildings sell colorful wrestling masks, woven baskets, and maracas. Nearby stands the Whaley House Museum, dubbed one of the Most Terrifying Places in America by the Travel Channel. Ghosts of former residents are said to inhabit the rooms, which are filled with Victorian furniture, eerie dolls, and squeegees for ectoplasm cleanup.

Great experience, but the cost doubled when adding captain, gas and tolls. Also, takes about 45 minutes to get out of river which cuts into your time in open seas and at sandbar.

Everybody had A LOT OF FUN. The booking process was easy. The ride was 4 hours, take you down Miami river and go anchor somewhere to swim and back.

Amazing hospitality/catering staff I was here for a 3-day work event. The hotel was modern and clean and it was easy to get to the water. I am easy to please though. What stood out was Danielle and the catering staff. She was very attentive to loading us up with all kinds of good food and treats and taking care of any comfort need within our meeting room. I hope the next time I have a work meeting, I'm hosted by someone like her. Thanks again Danielle! You're awesome!

Wonderful property In general, I found the people of San Diego to be super friendly, and for me it all started at the Hotel Republic. Every person I encountered was so friendly and helpful. It’s in a great location and was in walking distance to many of the places on my itinerary. The ride to and from the airport was under 15 minutes. We did Uber everywhere and I never waited more than ten minutes for my ride. I just returned from a four night stay. I had a great time and a comfortable stay at this property. Our room was a decent size with a city view and just the tiniest view of the bay, which I appreciated. The shower pressure and temperature were great and I really appreciated the shower gel and other amenities in the bathroom. I can’t speak to housekeeping because I declined it for my entire stay, but my room was very clean upon arrival. The room had a safe and mini fridge which I used to store water. There was no coffee maker, but I am not a coffee drinker and appreciated not having the unnecessary device taking up space. We watched Netflix on the tv. The bed was firm and comfortable, the pillows not so much. I inquired about different pillows at the front desk and they brought up a couple of feather pillows. Problem solved! I had breakfast at Trade on two mornings. The food was very good. I am still thinking about that breakfast sandwich and crispy tots! I also had a margarita one evening, which I appreciated being able to snag before heading up to my room. I noticed in a couple of other reviews that people mentioned the dirty windows. It’s true. They were pretty dirty, so it’s time to get that taken care of. Other than that, I have nothing bad to say. I would stay here again without question and would recommend it to others without hesitation.

Surrounding area is a bit sketchy Stayed for 3 nights in July for my bachelorette. Here are some pros and cons: Pros: 1. Feels pretty clean and modern 2. 10-15 minute walk to Little Italy and Gaslamp District, where all of the restaurants/bars are 3. There is a mini fridge in the room 4. Free extra toiletries like makeup wipes, Q-tips, cotton pads, and Purell hand wipes 5. There's a rooftop bar/restaurant but it's pretty expensive. But if you're feeling like a splurge and/or don't want to leave the hotel, it might be worth checking out 6. It's close to the airport. The bus ride from the airport is about 10 minutes, and then you just need to walk two blocks to the hotel Cons: 1. Hotel is located in the Financial District/Downtown but the surrounding area seems pretty sketchy 2. The tub was a bit cloggy 3. They must have really old pipes or something because whenever someone in a surrounding room (either next door or maybe it was upstairs), I could hear the pipes 4. Pillows are not comfortable - they are super flat 5. Check-in is not until 4 but two out of three rooms were available. So we were waiting in one of the rooms until we could get into the third one. They said they'd call us but they never did. We ended up calling the front desk and they said it was available, so we were waiting around for nothing Overall, the cons outweigh the pros so I wouldn't stay here again if I'm ever in SD again - plus, the area wasn't the best, which is probably the biggest con for me when staying at a hotel.
