Toledo, Ohio: Family-Friendly Fun on the Maumee River

Toledo's skyline—a cluster of glass-lined skyscrapers and industrial-age factories—is reflected on the Maumee River. It's a visible reminder of the city's past as a factory town and its development as a center for arts and culture. In the early 1900s, Toledo was nicknamed The Glass City for the many glass-production companies that were anchored there. Today, the Toledo Museum of Art honors that past with a glassmaking studio that dates back to the 1960s and an eco-friendly glass pavilion that houses thousands of ancient and modern examples of glasswork. The museum's extensive art collection also includes paintings by van Gogh, Picasso, and Rembrandt.

If you're traveling with kids in tow, make time to stop at Imagination Station to see hands-on exhibits and shows that explore engineering and science. Kids can ride a bicycle across a high wire and stumble across tilted furniture in the Distorted Gravity room. The award-winning Toledo Zoo is another pleasant kid-friendly distraction; USA Today ranked it among the nation's best zoos in 2014. Don't miss the aquarium's 90,000 gallon tank filled with colorful live coral and tropical marine life.

Shoutout to special staff I am writing this review after many months because I could not forget about the hospitality of both Mary and Andre who welcomed my wife and myself as we pulled in late at night around 1 am. They were incredibly kind, made the check in process so smooth, and offered additional advice and tips for our stay / around Toledo beyond our expectations. It really warmed our hearts. We wish them and the establishment nothing but the best. Thank you again Mary and Andre.

Nice hotel downtown We stayed here when attending a show at Huntington Center. The hotel was conveniently located to the show and to several nice restaurants. The room was nice enough, quiet and had a view of the river and summit street. The hotel has affordable valet parking and a rooftop restaurant that we enjoyed after our show. We would definitely stay again if visiting Toledo…

Dangerous Hotel TERRIBLE Experience I travel into Toledo for work and have regularly been staying at the Renaissance downtown. I am a frequent traveler. This is by far the worst experience I have had in any hotel during my lifetime.  I work 630a-730p so I use this hotel mainly for sleep.  The day of Wednesday, January 21st, I checked in at 730 PM for a two day stay. I was lounging in my room when at 930 PM I heard a loud knock on the door. I walked to the door to see who could be knocking and to my surprise, a man barged into my room. He stated that he was maintenance and was there to change TV batteries.  Needless to say, this scared me as a female solo traveler. I exited the room immediately and went to the front desk. The woman working was helpful and stated this was not protocol, but maintenance routinely disregarded set protocols for room entry. She offered me a room change, which I accepted. I was upgraded to their presidential suite (named the Glass City Suite) the same night for the trouble. The following evening, Thursday January 22nd, I returned to my room at 7:30 PM.  As I slept I thought I heard the trickling of water but fell back asleep. At 0200 AM, a loud and intense crash woke me out of a deep sleep. The ceiling in the bedroom room had collapsed in, the ceiling tile was in pieces all over the floor. Ice cold water gushed in, following the ceiling tile. This was directly next to where I was sleeping, I honestly could have been injured, or killed. The tile was that heavy  and saturated with water.  I was absolutely terrified and disoriented in the dark room. I packed all my items into my suitcase while attempting to call the front desk. The front desk did not answer, so I threw on my clothes grabbed my bags and headed to the lobby. There was no one at the front desk at 0210 AM. I contemplated sleeping in my car until I left for work. Fortunately there was one employee who appeared in the lobby and went to find the front desk worker for me. He apologized, and offered to comp my stay. I was then moved to a third room, which I was assured had a stable ceiling.   At 0220, I entered a corner King on the third floor. Upon entrance, it was apparent the room was freezing despite the sound of the heat running. The thermostat was set for Heat at 72 degrees, but read 63 degrees. I called down to the front desk and was assured the room would heat up if I increased the temperature on the thermostat. He said it would take 5 minutes, an it was only cold because it was previously unoccupied. Faced with a 0600 AM wake up and absolutely exhausted, I set the temperature to 90 and attempted to sleep. When I woke up, the thermostat read 58 degrees and was absolutely frigid. This was truly a nightmare stay, I am appalled at the state of this hotel. My work and mental health have suffered for staying at the Renaissance Toledo Downtown.  I caution anyone contemplating booking this hotel. The staff are pleasant, however the facilities are poorly maintained and unsafe for any traveler. I will never stay at this hotel again, and have checked out for the last time.
