Ontario, California: LA Suburb near Outlet Shopping and Downhill Skiing at Mount Baldy

Ontario, California, is a suburban oasis about 40 miles east of busy downtown LA. The city is home to Southern California’s largest outlet shopping mall, Ontario Mills, where you can find hundreds of factory-outlet stores, an improv comedy club, and an AMC theater. It’s also home to Graber Olive House, founded in 1894—Ontario’s oldest existing olive grove. The company still grows, cures, and cans their famous olives, and you can tour the facility all year long.

In the winter, you can ski, snowboard, and tube at the Mount Baldy ski area. Angeles National Forest is less than an hour’s drive from Ontario. The forest spans more than 500 miles of hiking, horseback-riding, and moonwalking trails, as well as stocked fishing areas (visitors 16 or older must have a fishing license).

Disgusting This place was disgusting. Trash was left in piles everywhere throughout the property. Vagrants were wandering the property going through the dumpsters. The door to our room looked as if it had been kicked in at some point. The carpeting left my 1 year old son’s feet black by the end of the night. There was dirt or sand all over the kitchen floor, as well as in the bed. The upholstery on the sofa and chairs was literally falling off. And to top it off, in the morning our son found a used marijuana joint on the floor. We think we took it before he could’ve put it in his mouth, but with toddlers, who knows. And in this day and age, what it could’ve been laced with. This property is filthy, and disgusting.

Not the greatest experience This place is not what you expect. It is like little cottages. rooms are dark and they were always running out of towels. the service was decent. would not stay here again.

It’s Sad As an aging road warrior, I’ve always relied on Residence Inn’s to be safe, clean, comfortable, and well-kept. A place you could always count on. I’m not sure what’s going on with this property near the Ontario airport, but something’s off. It’s not a housekeeping issue, mind you; the staff are friendly as can be. Maybe Covid took too much of a toll, or maybe Marriott is writing off this property… I don’t know, but this isn’t the Residence Inn quality I’ve experienced from so many other RI stays. I’m not sure if this is owned by a third party and managed by a fourth party, or if it’s a Marriott-owned direct property—but someone’s taking out and not putting back in. Maybe it’s the current climate of greed, but it’s just sad. I’ve included some pictures of worn carpet, ripped carpet, torn drapes, stained furniture, peeling wallpaper, stained tub, mildewed shower curtain, and exterior deferred maintenance. In my particular unit, three of the lightbulbs are out, two of the light switches don’t work, and one fixture flickers like there’s a short somewhere either in the fixture itself or the wall switch; it’s just sad. It shouldn’t be this way, or at least it shouldn’t be this way at a Marriott property. Two items which are certainly in control of management are the decision to charge seven dollars to park behind a raised arm gate in what can only be described as unsecured parking, so I don’t know what you’re paying the seven dollars for — never encountered that anywhere at this size and type of location. (I’m not talking about a parking fee. It’s a choice on the check-in form). And the breakfast bar! This is the least appetizing I’ve ever encountered… again, the people are warm and wonderful—but the budget allocated for F&Bis well below expectations. If the price seems right for you and you think it’s an amazing discounted bargain; great! Just be aware that’s what you’re paying for, a discounted distressed Marriott property. Again, the people try to make up for it, but some things just can’t be solved with a smile. I had to stay here due to some family needs, but if I hadn’t prepaid, I certainly would’ve moved. It’s sad.
