Ouray, Silverton, and Telluride Colorado: Former Mining Towns in the San Juan Mountains with John Wayne History

The former gold- and silver-mining town of Ouray sits at an elevation of 7,760 feet in southwestern Colorado. Surrounded by craggy red mountains on three sides, 19th-century buildings such as the town’s Victorian homes and converted saloons dot a valley floor that still looks like the set of an old western. Ouray’s location in the mountains keeps it pretty isolated—though not quite as isolated as it was when Butch Cassidy hid out here after robbing a bank for the first time in nearby Telluride.

History abounds in each of these towns that also provide all sorts of mountain adventures and photo opportunities in every direction. A few options to consider: Ridgway State Park, The Ouray Hot Springs, Ice Climbing Park and Via Ferrata Climbing Center, Backcountry adventures on Red Mountain and Lizard Head Passes, Silverton & Telluride Ski areas, and the Million Dollar Highway Tour.

WAY Way Way Over Priced This is Not a lodge it’s an old motel they renovated is all. Extremely overpriced for what you get which was a room with a bed and a bathroom. No breakfast with your room nothing. It is was so disappointing. The front desk lady was nice. The room was clean. But not worth the huge price tag. If you pay over $100 for this place you are paying way too much. Ouray has much nicer places with way more character, and a lot more things to do. Stay here only if passing thru for the night.

Great location! Great last minute stay with two kids and a dog. Checkin was a little confusing bc it’s at the bar area. Super friendly help at checkin. Rooms were clean. The bar and restaurant was really busy on a Saturday night. We didn’t eat there but did stop back by for the banana bread dessert, which was good. Pleasant surprise on our trip! Not able to leave dog in the room while we went to dinner and it was hot for the time of year so we had to find somewhere to eat that was dog friendly.

Comfortable and modern This motel has great value and comfort. I stayed in room 115 and it has all I need. Only remark is that such a nice motel should have better coffee than Folgers in the room. They provide complimentary fruit and dog treats. I recommend! Staff are friendly and helpful.
