The closest hotel in St. Marys to the Cumberland Island Visitor Center, and a gateway to Cumberland Island National Seashore and its adjoining ferry, the Riverview Hotel offers convenient accommodations for anybody looking to explore Georgia's largest barrier island.
Historic, family-owned property: The hotel has been owned and operated by the Brandon family since the 1920's.
Individually decorated rooms: The hotel's 18 upstairs guest rooms overlook the river, beach, and the street.
Popular day trip: Okefenokee Swamp Wildlife Reserve, one of the country's largest freshwater swamps, is a scenic setting for canoeing, fishing, and spotting alligators.
St. Marys, Georgia: Gateway to the Cumberland Island National Seashore
During the summer, the Cumberland Queen ferry runs thrice daily to the Cumberland Island National Seashore from the town of Saint Marys. Outside of a private charter, the ferry is the only way to get to the island. Once there, visitors can rent a bicycle and explore the beaches, dunes, marshes, and lakes that abound on the largest of Georgia's Golden Isles. Reservations for the ferry are recommended—click here for more information.
Back on the mainland, St. Marys is known for its love of rock shrimp (culminating in the Rock Shrimp Festival on the first weekend in October) and a pair of museums. St. Marys Submarine Museum examines some of America's most famous subs, with nearly 20,000 artifacts on hand, including a working periscope. The other museum is the The Cumberland Island National Seashore Museum, where visitors learn that the last battle of the War of 1812 was fought at St. Marys’ Point Peter, five days after the Battle of New Orleans.
