St. Marys, Georgia: Gateway to the Cumberland Island National Seashore
During the summer, the Cumberland Queen ferry runs thrice daily to the Cumberland Island National Seashore from the town of Saint Marys. Outside of a private charter, the ferry is the only way to get to the island. Once there, visitors can rent a bicycle and explore the beaches, dunes, marshes, and lakes that abound on the largest of Georgia's Golden Isles. Reservations for the ferry are recommended—click here for more information.
Back on the mainland, St. Marys is known for its love of rock shrimp (culminating in the Rock Shrimp Festival on the first weekend in October) and a pair of museums. St. Marys Submarine Museum examines some of America's most famous subs, with nearly 20,000 artifacts on hand, including a working periscope. The other museum is the The Cumberland Island National Seashore Museum, where visitors learn that the last battle of the War of 1812 was fought at St. Marys’ Point Peter, five days after the Battle of New Orleans.
