Brunswick, Maine: Scholarly New England Town with Historic Architecture

Cobbled streets, a rocky coastline, and historic, steepled churches—Brunswick has New England style to spare. The former 17th-century mill village sits at the gateway to Maine’s midcoast region, an area known for its beautiful harbors and growing arts scene. Every town along the coast has established a distinctive character. For its part, Brunswick is a culturally rich destination anchored by the presence of Bowdoin College, which U.S. News & World Report named one of the top 10 national liberal-arts colleges. There’s no shortage of enriching activities on campus, including plays in two theaters and concerts in the music hall. The Bowdoin College Museum of Art, one of the oldest art museums in the nation, boasts a fine collection of more than 15,000 objects dating from ancient times to the present.

Downtown, the brick sidewalk and 19th-century architecture harks back to the olden days. In winter, the pedestrian-friendly district looks a lot like a Currier and Ives print, complete with carriage rides and an ice-skating rink. Specialty shops and fine restaurants make it a great place for shoppers and foodies alike.

Great place to stay if you are on a budget. In a great location for out of state travelers as I was. Smack rap in the middle of two great places for touring. View out the window isn’t the best and the window we had was actually cracked. Other then that it was a great stay. Big breakfast selection as well!

I would not stay here. Not a good experience. Groupon has also been a pain to deal with on this. Think twice before you stay here...

Not a “boutique” hotel We were there for four night. Two days we left the makeup room sign on the door. The room was not touched. We had to go to the desk to get fresh towels. On the day that the room was made up they took the shampoo and soap but did not replace them. One day there was no hot water. We stay at Choice properties whenever we can, but this was one of the worst stays we have ever had. The hotel talks of being a boutique hotel. It is not.

Not bad but could be better Check in was difficult as the desk clerk couldn't seem to get logged into the system with their credentials and after about 30 minutes and several calls to the manager, the clerk gave up and just gave us our keys. Our room, while decent had some trash and an empty wine bottle on the top of the armoire. There were small stains on the curtain, a large crack in the shower and the exhaust fan had a large piece of the corner broken. Water temps tended to fluctuate from warm to hot, depending on the time of day it was being used. The breakfast wasn't great as the eggs had clearly been sitting there for a while and had dried out. Several of the English muffins were hard and the pancake appliance wasn't on. The staff seemed friendly enough, the halls smelled nice and location was convenient to the local shopping.

Short, but perfect stay. Clean, inviting room, very comfortable bed, freshly prepared hot breakfast and a very nice couple who own/manage it. Bathrooms very clean, linens in order. A minute from restaurants and downtown Freeport, 2 minutes from several excellent vintage stores. Excellent Value. Would stay here again.
