Beyond the Las Vegas Strip: Old Vegas and Red Rock Canyon

It can feel like the entire city of Las Vegas revolves around the Strip if you never venture beyond that neon-lit corridor. But there’s plenty to see and do once you step off Las Vegas Boulevard. You can find a taste of Old Vegas on Fremont Street, where vintage signs and showgirls crowned with headdresses recall the days of Sinatra and Martin. Beginning at dusk, a canopy of more than 12 million LED lights erupts in a psychedelic light-and-music show every hour. For an aerial view, zoom down the center of Fremont Street on a zipline.

Nature puts on its own show at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, a landscape of fiery-red sandstone formations and limestone cliffs just 17 miles outside the city. Motor down the 13-mile scenic drive or ditch the car and strike out on any of more than 20 hiking trails that course through the region’s otherworldly topography.

A Solid Base for Exploring the City SAHARA Las Vegas has all the basics covered - clean, comfortable, and conveniently located. As the end stop on the monorail, it makes for an easy and accessible base when exploring Las Vegas and its surrounds. If you find a good deal, take it - this is a reliable place to stay for a couple of days of adventure. The hotel delivers what it promises, and there’s really nothing to complain about. The rooms are modern, the casino floor is lively, and the overall vibe is relaxed and unpretentious. A small note to management: the pool hours (9:00 AM to 6:00 PM) could use a rethink. Guests hoping for an early morning swim to start the day - or a relaxing dip after a long day out at places like the Grand Canyon - are missing out. Extended hours would go a long way in adding to the guest experience. Overall, SAHARA offers great value, especially if you’re after a no-fuss, well-located stay in Vegas.

A big disappointment It lacks cleanliness and the updated rooms are poorly done. The restaurants are pricy certainly not Vegas pricing. Very dissatisfied in our stay. The staff is friendly and that is common in this town. Not the best area however you do have the tram available to get up and down the strip.

Decent hotel Decent hotel that has been refurbished in the last couple of years. Location OK at the North end of the strip. It's around a 5 minute walk to the Strat and 30 minute walk to the main strip area. The hotel has It's own monorail stop if you don't fancy walking. We stayed in the Blanca Tower. Room was clean with 2 double beds. We were offered an upgrade for 15 dollars per night to a bigger room but didn't require it. Staff friendly on check-in. Room had basic facilities with an iron and hairdryer. No tea or coffee just a couple of bottles of water. Pool area was nice with a good atmosphere. Giant screens showing sport through the day. Casino was good but smaller than most of the bigger hotels. Didn't use any of the restaurants but food seemed reasonably priced. We hired a car and free parking was available at the hotel. Overall good stay and would recommend for a cheaper option to the bigger hotel resorts.
