Beyond the Las Vegas Strip: Old Vegas and Red Rock Canyon

It can feel like the entire city of Las Vegas revolves around the Strip if you never venture beyond that neon-lit corridor. But there’s plenty to see and do once you step off Las Vegas Boulevard. You can find a taste of Old Vegas on Fremont Street, where vintage signs and showgirls crowned with headdresses recall the days of Sinatra and Martin. Beginning at dusk, a canopy of more than 12 million LED lights erupts in a psychedelic light-and-music show every hour. For an aerial view, zoom down the center of Fremont Street on a zipline.

Nature puts on its own show at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, a landscape of fiery-red sandstone formations and limestone cliffs just 17 miles outside the city. Motor down the 13-mile scenic drive or ditch the car and strike out on any of more than 20 hiking trails that course through the region’s otherworldly topography.

Great and affordable hotel Customer service was great. Location was perfect and we were able to access the Monorail to get to our pool tournament at the westgate. Also being close to the monorail we were able to go to the strip when we had free time. Loved that the rooms per night we cheaper and free parking is a plus also.

Experience Vegas life in a beautiful hotel without all the noise and crowds. This is our 3rd year visiting the Sahara in Vegas, and this year's trip did not disappoint. The service is top-notch throughout this hotel from the front desk, to the housekeeping staff who freshens your room and towels every day and keeps your room looking and feeling super clean and fresh if you choose, to every staff member you walk past including those that just man security points by the pool and drop off areas. We had dinner at the Balla Italian Restaurant as well, and it was spectacular. The atmosphere is casual, yet elegant in the sense that you are going to receive a 5-star experience from the moment you are seated until you are leaving. The ambience is somewhat bustling and lively with tasteful music playing throughout. Our server, Daniela, was "the best of the best." She was professional in every way, yet also had just the right amount of friendliness without being intrusive. I started with a French Martini, which was perfectly mixed. My husband had the prosciutto & burrata, which was delicious and plenty for two to share. For dinner, I had the filet and my husband had the Chicken Marsala and both dishes were superb. We split the whipped potatoes with garlic and cheese, also excellent for a side. I had the chocolate tarte for dessert, which was a spectacular ending to a perfect dining night. If you happen to be here on a Friday or Saturday night, you can also attend the Dualling Pianos show for free, which we did attend. This is not a classical piano concert, but rather a fun, lively, and entertaining sing along to popular songs that everyone loves with opportunities to make requests. The Sahara is just big enough to do everything you come to Vegas to do, but it's not loud and the crowd tends to be more for adults vs. young children, although you will see some young children. They do have an amazing 21 and over pool, but note that it is not open until March, so until then, you would use their rooftop pool area, which is open to all and includes a heated pool. We love this hotel and can always get a good hotel package deal when we come here. You won't be disappointed.

Exceptional service and stat at Sahara Hotel I was truly amazed with check in staff. Jane was exceptional with helping me extend my stay. She was kind and very helpful. The cleaning staff was amazing and kept our towels clean daily and made our beds. It was a lovely stay from beginning to end. The staff works really hard with all the accommodations. Loved having water in our room daily as well. I will definitely be back. My favorite hotel.
