San Clemente, California: Laid-Back Coastal Town with Spanish Colonial Architecture

The laid-back town of San Clemente is set on the coast of Southern California, about halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego. The beach is known for having some of the best surfing in Orange County, but visitors don’t just come for the waves; there’s also a quaint pier and oceanfront eateries lining a palm-studded coastline that still hasn’t been overdeveloped. After a day of swimming or fishing, you can take advantage of pits set aside for sunset bonfires. San Clemente also has miles of biking trails, including some that wind through Camp Pendleton—the country’s largest Marine Corps base.

When San Clemente was founded in the 1920s, it was envisioned as a Spanish-style resort town. You can see some evidence of that plan in the red-tiled roofs crowning the shops and restaurants along Avenida Del Mar, the town’s main artery. Casa Romantica, the home of San Clemente’s founder, has been converted into a cultural center showcasing work by local artists.

We were really fortunate to get a room with an ocean view. I also really liked the pool and the hot tub as well as the BBQ grills. We cooked 2 meals in the room and BBQd some bacon wrapped steaks.

Nice location but needs some updates This resort is somewhat dated with upgrades needed to the bathrooms and kitchen area. The furniture is adequate. We had an ocean view which was beautiful on the days when there was no fog. The sunsets were breath taking. The location is close to San Diego and many beaches.

Lovely Location and Facility Spoilt by Unwarranted Parking Fee This is a lovely location, ten minutes walk from San Clemente State Beach and we have enjoyed our several stays here. It is clean and has a nice pool and hot tubs. The staff are friendly and the rooms are clean and bright despite being a little dated. It is also nice and quite apart from the regular howls of coyotes each evening. Beware that the hotel has recently introduced a $25 per night parking fee, which is completely unwarranted and adds up to a considerable sum for longer stays. This may well put us off going back again.

A Convenient Stopover A dated facility that shows in the room we occupied. More attention to detail is given to the lobby than that residency. However, the Inn is conveniently located.
