San Diego, California: Historical Attractions and Electric Nightlife in Southern California

San Diego’s sunny, comfortably warm weather and 70 miles of coastline have long attracted vacationing out-of-towners, but the city’s inland scene is no slouch, either. The Gaslamp Quarter is arguably the trendiest listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The area forms both the historic center of town and a hub of San Diego nightlife, with nearly 100 Victorian-era buildings occupied by high-end boutiques, jewelers, and gourmet restaurants.

A stroll through iconic Balboa Park takes you past 17 separate museums, as well as the world-famous and much beloved San Diego Zoo. There’s also the vibrant Spanish Village Art Center, a living gallery where local artists produce pottery, handblown glass, and oil paintings for sale.

Farther north, in Old Town—site of the first European settlement in California—shops in Mission-style stucco buildings sell colorful wrestling masks, woven baskets, and maracas. Nearby stands the Whaley House Museum, dubbed one of the Most Terrifying Places in America by the Travel Channel. Ghosts of former residents are said to inhabit the rooms, which are filled with Victorian furniture, eerie dolls, and squeegees for ectoplasm cleanup.

An “OK” visit We chose this hotel because of its close proximity to UCSD’s medical facility where I was scheduled for an early morning procedure. The check in process was easy; we requested early check in and the room was ready when we arrived at 2pm. Service at the front desk was friendly and professional. My request for a room on a high floor was honored, but we were disappointed in the condition of our room. The surfaces were covered in dust, the sheets looked rather yellow and worn, and the bathroom was not in very good condition. Besides the hairs in the bathtub, the grout is in serious need of deep cleaning, and the caulking needs repair. On prior Marriott stays, we have found the tv remotes in plastic bags and signs limiting the occupancy in the elevators. None of these Covid protocols were in place, despite the spiking Delta variant. There was only one option for on-site food, so I ordered a turkey BLT with avocado. When I brought the sandwich up to the room, I discovered it was basically a grilled cheese with salsa and rubbery chunks of overcooked turkey. No bacon. No avocado. I don’t recall seeing this on the menu, and it was basically inedible. The soundproofing between rooms isn’t great. We could hear every door open and close in the hall, but the most disturbing thing was that every time our neighbors repeatedly slammed what we assumed was their bathroom door, our headboards rattled against the wall and our beds shook! This property could use some updating in the rooms; not sure if we would choose to stay there again, given lots of other choices in the Golden Triangle area of La Jolla.

Great stay! Location is superb being across the street from a large mall with shops and great restaurants. Being close to the 5 and not far from downtown La Jolla. Misty did an awesome job getting me the quiet room I asked for. Many rooms have balcony's. Staff were all around great especially the valet staff! Rooms were a bit tired but super clean and well maintained. Starbucks was great as was the lobby bar which was open for meals and drinks. I'll be back!

Poor customer service and hairs in shower We were told over the phone that a rollaway bed could be added to the room. When we got to the hotel we were told this was not possible because it was a fire violation. We had to book another room on the spot to accommodate our family and the hotel would not give us the same rate as we had paid for the other room. Instead they wanted to charge over $100 more because the hotel was busy even though it was their staff that told us that could accommodate another bed. Once in the room discovered hairs in the shower, tiny old bath towels and in the morning had to call for extra coffee cups (only one in the room). Called front desk to help with WiFi access (not free unless you’re a Marriott member) and staff was unhelpful and not the friendliest. For the money and Marriott name expected better service and amenities. For the record, we have been Marriott members for years, but that didn’t seem to matter.
