Cape May, New Jersey: Seaside Resort Town with Victorian Architecture

Long billed as America’s oldest seaside resort, Cape May sits at New Jersey’s southernmost tip. The setting is so idyllic that Travel Channel named the town’s coastline 1 of the top 10 beaches in the country. Aside from beachcombing, popular pastimes here include fishing, whale watching, and bird watching. In fact, the New York Times called Cape May “one of North America’s hottest birding spots.” You might see bald eagles, herons, and woodcocks. In the spring, keep your eyes peeled for the latter’s intricate mating dance.

After a fire ravaged most of Cape May in 1878, residents rebuilt in the contemporary style of the time, and dozens of their stately Victorian homes remain standing today. Consequently, the Cape May Historic District has earned the distinction of being a National Historic Landmark. Horses and carriages tour the colorful, cottage-lined streets, which have been deemed off-limits to chain stores in order to preserve the classic small-town atmosphere. Along Delaware Bay stands the 1859 Cape May Lighthouse. Those who climb the tower’s 199 stairs are rewarded at the top with an unbeatable view of the Atlantic Ocean.

Great family trip at Christmas time. The front desk staff got us in our room a little early so we could settle in and arrange some Christmas gifts for our other family members coming in. Our rooms were immaculate and well stocked with dishes, glasses, coffee, pots and pans. The bathrooms and kitchen were immaculate. The lines were clean and bright and the beds were very comfortable. Everything looked brand new- no frayed carpets or chipped tiles or stained sinks and toilets. Staff came every day with fresh towels and nicely made beds and did the dishes. We got texts from the hotel concierge asking if we needed any information on area events, restaurants etc. Also, it was so quiet!! There were many cars in the parking lot but we never heard anyone making noise. Nice view of the beach, even though we didn't go. Beautiful sunrises. Just a great stay. First class!!

The Sandpiper is the Best! The Sandpiper is an excellent choice! They never disappoint. The view is amazing, close to the downtown area and restaurants. The units are well maintained and can be best described as a "Ritz-Carlton Meets the Beach" vibe with its marble sinks, plush beds and white/light gray theme with beach decor. We are long time returning guests for a reason!

Another Great Stay at The Sandpiper The facilities, room and Cape Resorts customer service are top notch. And you can't beat the location. This was like the fifth or sixth time we have stayed at the Sandpiper. We have stayed in 5 other places in Cape May and this is by far the best.
