Scottsdale, Arizona: Stucco Mansions amid Rocky Desert Landscape

Scottsdale once served as ranch land where farmers grew oranges and lemons and cowboys kicked up dust in the fierce, dry heat of the Sonoran Desert. That era earned Scottsdale the nickname of “The West’s Most Western Town.” Today, it is an affluent city landscaped with lush green grass and lined with stucco mansions. For a glimpse of the city’s Old West roots, head to Old Town Scottsdale, where wooden boardwalks and hitching posts sit in front of a retro ice-cream parlor and rustic specialty shops.

Upon arriving in Scottsdale, you know you’re in the desert—cacti and tumbleweeds dot the landscape, and dry shrubs and gnarled trees cover the McDowell Mountains in the distance. To get a closer look at Southwestern flora, head to the Desert Botanical Garden. There, themed trails wind past huge cacti and other moisture-hoarding succulents, best seen in the cooler early morning or twilight hours.

Just OK... I live in Texas and I had a Diamond Sampler certificate that was expiring. In order to cut costs, we drove to this location, which appeared to be the best rated Diamond Sampler option in the area. As we drove in we noticed a lot of construction going on at neighboring lots…all multiple stories. Villa Mirage has two and three story units. Unfortunately, other than the pool area, your patio faces the neighboring patios. There's a nice little poolside eatery on-site, with limited food choices, during the hours of 9-7. Nearby was a basketball court and several pickleball courts. The pool was full of kids, so very few adults were in it unless they were watching or playing with their kids. There are activities both at the pool and in the Activity Center five days a week. The staff were helpful and friendly and provided maps to the sister property and the area at large. There is a mid-week basic clean and a Linen Change costs extra. Not wanting the pitter patter of feet over my head for the next 5 days, I chose a third floor unit. Big mistake! I knew there were no elevators, but I forgot all the stuff I was bringing with me. Trying to carry food and luggage up was tiring, especially when it was over 100 degrees. The unit itself was tired/well used. It wasn't home and I was using someone else's air, so no complaints there, but the cabinets were shabby and appliances dated. The patio furniture hadn't seen water for quite a while and that was probably due to the fact that most smart people don't choose a third floor unit! We had a one-bedroom that was amply spaced with a huge bathroom a shower and jacuzzi-sized tub. There was a television in the living room and bedroom with plenty of closets, a safe, and a washer and dryer. Even if you hike or sightsee, I doubt you would do anything in the summer after 10/11 a.m. and before the sun sets. It was 93 degrees at 9:30 a.m. We did venture out to Old Town (at “high” noon) and, except for a few die hards, we were the only ones out and about. There are lots of restaurants and shopping options. Unfortunately, this is one location I won’t be coming back to in spite of the staff. I prefer a view with my stay and possibly an adult pool with a swim-up bar.

Just oj Pool is the nicest thing about this property but even with saying that it’s too small for such a big property the rooms were old and outdated furniture bathroom very outdated carpet old and dirty grounds were pretty nice the staff was very nice. I was charged with daily resort fee which was ridiculous. $207

Disappointing The interior was old looking, carpets were disgusting, bathrooms were clean but old. I wouldn’t call it a resort, has no store to purchase anything, one small poolside eatery bar that closes at 7pm and only one pool that was full of little children. You have to go off property for everything. If your looking for a scenic location don’t go here. Be aware they charge resort fees per day.
