Hilo, Hawaii: Big Community Surrounded by Natural Beauty

On the island of Hawaii’s eastern side you’ll find Hilo, a community tucked between beautiful forest reserves and the Pacific Ocean. Day trips to the Upper Waiakea Forest Reserve and others in the area take hikers to trails surrounded by tropical plants. The largest settlement on The Big Island, Hilo also has a developed downtown with shops, restaurants, galleries, and theaters. Make sure to visit the Pacific Tsunami Museum, the state’s only museum dedicated to education about the 1946 tsunami that devastated Hawaii. Another must-see is Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano about 43 miles northwest of Hilo. Considered one of the most sacred peaks in Hawaii, it has hiking trails and important summit observatories.

The hotel is more like a hostel in the sense that the room is at the motel level of furnishings. Cozy otherwise, but you can use it only as a place to sleep.

Great for Groups Overall it was a great stay! Amenities were robust and the grounds were beautiful! There are plenty of restaurants nearby and the staff is wonderful. The bed is comfortable and the rooms are perfect for the Island vibe. The little things like common room, live music, and welcome drink add to the space.

Great stay at SCP; experience Hilo We just stayed at the SCP for a couple nights in late July. Overall I recommend this hotel. We were really happy with our stay and just want to add some perspective to the reviews. Mostly, we really liked the vibe; super nice people, down to Earth, a mix of tourists but also Hawaiians staying there (there were, for example, some families and kids from Oahu there for a baseball tournament). They have done a good job with adding little amenities. The live music as night was very cool. The rooms are what they are; if you are looking for luxury you won't find it here, but neither will you find it anywhere else in Hilo. (We walked over to the bigger hotels over on the Bay; they are very very tired, and I would stay here ten times out of ten over those places). Rooms were very clean, comfortable, beds are good, they have AC and ours had a nice view of the koi pond. It was tight for four of us (kids ages 9 and 11) but we managed fine for a couple nights. The nice surprise for us was the little cove on the Bay out front. Each day this becomes kind of like a community swimming hole. The water is clear, turtles swimming around, and kids are jumping off rocks and the seawall into the water. Families picnicking on the grass. We took the paddleboards out and just hung in the water for an hour and swum. Not a lot of tourists which is great, and of course, is sort of the point of traveling. We ate at Pond's across the cove one night which was a similar vibe.

OK for one night, if you need to be near the airport Stayed here for 4 nights with family and would only recommend it for very short stays. The building is an older budget motel that has been cheaply refurbished. We were excited by the lovely pictures and descriptions on their website, but were disappointed in the actual experience. The biggest problem is noise. SCP Hilo is located right underneath the flight path for Hilo International Airport. Hotels near airports are fine, IF they are properly soundproofed. SCP Hilo is not. Doors and walls are very thin, and the louver windows let in all noise from outside. Expect to hear jets arriving and taking off, people walking by, accelerating cars, and your neighbors' conversations on either side. SCP provides a small sound machine that is not at all adequate to mask the jet noise that starts promptly at 6am every day. Plus, you need to choose between charging your phone or using the sound machine--there are not enough outlets to do both. The wall air conditioner was too drippy and noisy to run at night. Rooms are small and spartan. The flooring is cheap vinyl peel-and-stick planks, which have already begun to peel off the floor. In the bathroom, a large shelf jutted far out over the small bathroom sink, which makes washing your face impossible without bumping your head and getting water everywhere. There are no plates, bowls, or cutlery, not even a microwave, so plan on eating out for all meals. Usually in hostels with no food prep area there is some sort of shared kitchen; that was not the case here. On a positive note, the staff was extremely welcoming and friendly. Shared spaces such as the lobby were beautifully decorated. Really nice landscaping. The koi were fun to watch. We liked the location near Banyan Drive. But these things are harder to enjoy when you are sleep-deprived due to poor soundproofing. Next time we're in the area, we'll choose a vacation rental.
