South Lake Tahoe, California: Year-Round Haven for Outdoor Adventures and Late-Night Revelry

Lake Tahoe has no real off-season; people find ways to make use of its pristine water, beaches, and mountains all year long. In the summer, the lake’s clear, freshwater surface—which straddles the California-Nevada border—is dotted with swimmers, boaters, and jet skiers. Several ski resorts with world-class slopes typically stay open from November to April, and Emerald Bay State Park is accessible year-round. A moderately easy hike to the base of Lower Eagle Falls reveals breathtaking views of the waterfalls crashing down from above.

A diverse crowd of spectators gathers at night for South Lake Tahoe’s various events, which range from wine and food festivals to rock concerts and fireworks displays. A few miles northwest of South Lake Tahoe sits Stateline, Nevada, where a handful of casinos host high-stakes games of blackjack and solitaire.

I think Secrets Inn is trying very hard to make the most with what they have. The inside of the room had beautiful upgrades and presented well even though it is very small. The first night we were there was a weeknight so it was not too terribly bad, but the second night we barely slept due to the noise levels of everyone around us. In addition, the mattress was hard and uncomfortable and my husband and I both woke up stiff and sore due to the mattress. There was no table or chair in the room, which is important to me. I appreciated that they are trying, but there is only so much they can do with the structural situation of the rooms. Perhaps an upgrade to the mattresses would have helped. The cleanliness of the room left a little to be desired too. The wall in the bathroom had a sticky substance on it (kind of looked like someone opened a bottle of champagne or beer or something that exploded all over). The shower tile is beautiful, but there is what appears to be mold forming in the grout. Two of our bathroom towels had long black hairs in them, and we both have lighter colored hair. The personalized welcome letter (nice touch) said that if we needed extra pillows to ask at the front desk, yet when my husband asked for extra pillows, the front desk person gave him a pilow that had an embroidered cover on it that did not look clean... almost as if it came off of a couch or someone's bed. I will say the person who checked us in was extremely friendly and helpful. I don't typically consider myself a picky person, but I would not choose Secrets Inn again.

Gave my sister this deal as a wedding gift. Over the past few weeks after staying there she has been getting rashes and has come to find out she now has bed bugs. She hasn't stayed anywhere else since and now her condo is infested and she has to pay $2000 to get it cleaned out properly. DONT STAY AT THIS HOTEL!! I want a full refund returned to my card.
