Palm Desert, California: Shopping and Wildlife in Scenic Coachella Valley

Palm Desert shares the desert landscape and resort atmosphere of Palm Springs, about 20 miles to the northeast. It’s worth it to visit Palm Desert’s El Paseo, known as the Rodeo Drive of the desert for its art galleries, high-end boutiques, and brand-name retailers such as Gucci, Ralph Lauren, and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Palm Desert is also a gateway town to the more than 750,000-acre Joshua Tree National Park, located less than 60 miles away. The desert park is famous for its unusual geologic formations and mountains of twisted rock, ideal for rock climbing. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife including desert bighorn sheep, golden eagles, and coyotes.

For a guaranteed glimpse of wildlife, check out The Living Desert, a zoo, botanical garden, and animal hospital in Palm Desert. As you stroll throughout the various geographical regions—including North America and Africa’s Village WaTuTu—you will see flora and fauna indigenous to that area, which can include Mexican gray wolves, giraffes, or jaguars. The Living Desert also boasts a G-scale model train that winds its way through replicas of historical scenes, including a California mining and logging town and the Grand Canyon.

Our second time here, in comparison to our first time our room was outdated. The AC was loud and even leaked. The kitchen area and appliances were very outdated but nonetheless we still enjoyed our stay. Next time I’d just request for our first room.

GREAT RESORT, but............................. Did not go this year, but have been several times. Comfortable rooms, incredible pool (with large deep end). Front office staff customer focused. ONLY negative, is that the Resort has really "jacked" up their prices, whereas they use to be more reasonable. Close to shops & restaurants. PRICE is the only thing that may keep me from returning. I think there was a change of ownership.

You don't need what you reserved says Manager Chris I thought Shadow Mountain Resort was one of the best. I just checked in with Manager Chris to a studio. Weeks before I checked in, I confirmed the studio has a fully equipped kitchen including an oven and Shadow Mountain emailed me back and confirmed YES you have an oven (see photo). I am in the room and there is no oven. I showed Manager Chris and he said that was their mistake and if I want an oven it will cost me $90+ per night more. Terrible customer server from Manager. He even told me that I didn't really need an oven. So weird and had no integrity. And the saddest thing is I am here during high season and nothing else around for a week. Stuck at a resort with no integrity and spending more money on restaurants. Do yourself a favor and skip this resort Managed by Chris.

Felt right at home, BEAUTIFUL grounds and POOL :) The Resort is operated by a private company which hosts private condos for rent; some condo owners rent at the resort through Airbnb. The Resort owns the pools and grounds- and restaurant - so if you book via Airbnb, you may not have access to the HUGE beautiful figure 8 pool. This should not prevent you from booking because you can make arrangements to gain access to the pool and amenities. We did book with the Resort and were very happy with the stay and the condo- fully equipped (large Fridge) etc modern with granite and new appliances, dishes, knives etc in single with a nice bathroom and dbl sided vanity. Bed was comfortable and there was a pull out sofa, outdoor patio with a floor to ceiling sliding glass door to view the mountains, pool and flowers. The Staff at the front desk, housekeeping and the restaurant (Javier and his wife) were all truly pleasant and nice people. We ran into them at the Mall and they remembered us by name and we chatted like old friends. To go somewhere different, and feel at home is a wonderful gift!
