Carlsbad, California: Coastal Town North of San Diego

Carlsbad’s swath of golden coastline, nestled between San Diego and LA, is often called the Riviera of the West. It connects several of SoCal’s most well-known beach towns, including La Jolla and Coronado. The city was founded when an artesian well was discovered there in the 1880s, and the locals christened it after Karlsbad, a health-spa village in Bohemian Europe. The discovery of the mineral spring—coupled with the arrival of the Arizona Eastern Railway—helped promote Carlsbad as a tourist destination. It retains a small-town feel, though; its downtown is lined with boutiques, antique stores, and restaurants.

Unspoiled natural beauty is part of what draws people to Carlsbad. Carlsbad State Beach stretches for 4 miles along the Pacific Ocean; here, visitors can swim, surf, or stroll beside the nearby rocky bluffs. The city is also renowned as a premier growing region for poinsettias and ranunculus. Each year, The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch herald the arrival of spring as 50 acres of ranunculus fields blossom into a spectacular burst of color.

The service and the entire hotel is amazing. Our check in was so quick and easy. Johnny at the front desk answered all of our questions, and each time we went back to the front desk with more questions he went above and beyond to provide us with a great experience. Also, at the restaurant make sure to ask for Henry as your server you won’t regret it. Will definitely be visiting again soon.

Beware before booking that all facilities are shut down until some time in 2026. My son and his kids have been here before and enjoyed their stay. It was completely different this time. They are currently adding on and remodeling. It won’t be done until sometime next year. Everything is closed, no lobby, pool, bar, restaurant…. They don’t tell you any of this before you get there. You must go next door and check in at the Westin. They kept saying that we could use all of the Westin facilities. However the Westin does not have a water slide or pool bar. That is one of the main reasons that we selected the Sheraton. The kids wanted the water slide and we wanted food and drinks at the pool. They did tell us that they had an agreement with the Hilton vacation club across the street. We asked if we needed any pass. They told us no at that we could just use our room card. When we got there our room key would not get us through the security gates. When I got to my room I noticed that there was a hole in the ceiling where the smoke alarm should have been. I asked to speak to the manager to discuss the lack of a smoke alarm (it was probably a violation of the local fire codes to rent a room without a smoke detector) and our disappointment about all of the facilities being shut down. She apologized and said that she would give us a room credit plus 50,000 Marriott Bonvoy Points. When I checked out there was no room credit. I discussed with the desk clerk and he said that he would take me at my word about the credit but that the manager would meet to issue the points so he would leave her a message. She originally said that it would take about 5 days for the points to show up. It has been 2 weeks and no points. Not only do they deceive you by not informing you that all the facilities are closed before you book the room and drive 4 hours they also don’t follow through with their promise to make things right.

Construction Zone - follow up before booking There is major construction, which doesn't allow the resort to feel like a vacation. It wasn't a noise issue, it was just a pure construction site that I didn't feel safe with an elevator facing outside that anyone could access. I would recommend staying next door at the Westin, I wish I did research so I could have avoided switching rooms and planning around moving since I was only visiting for a short time. There was nothing posted on the website which was most disappointing as a Bonvoy member. I only knew of construction 3 days prior when I was told to check in elsewhere.

Very expensive for the low value you get We had very high expectations, but we were very disappointed. The check in was not on time and we had to wait like 30 minutes more. The room and amenities are average, which means that this is a very expensive hotel and the value offered is not worth it. I requested a room through the reservation membership with special amenities for an elderly person and the front desk said there was no availability, regardless I paid for it!... so, very disappointed with lack of honoring the book request and no respect for the money I paid.
