Atlantic City, New Jersey: Casinos and Carnival Rides Lining Historical Beachside Boardwalk

No trip to Atlantic City is complete without a stroll along its signature boardwalk, which stretches for 6 miles along New Jersey's eastern coast. Originally built in 1870 to keep sand out of hotel lobbies, the boardwalk grew in popularity as a place where you could drink and gamble during Prohibition without much trouble from the police, as depicted in HBO's Boardwalk Empire. The boardwalk is still popular for its casinos, but it's family-friendly, too; visitors are just as inclined to sit at the beach or stop at one of the many carnival rides.

On the boardwalk, it's worth it to check out the Absecon Lighthouse, which is more than 150 years old. It's possible to climb its 228 steps to the top, which features sweeping views of the city skyline and the sea.

Not good Yes the pillows were fluffy, however, I did not know until we checked in that the casino required a $150 deposit for “incidentals”. This put a dent in our money that we did not expect. I asked the person when we checked in when would we get our money back and he indicated as soon as we checked out. That was not true. We are still waiting for our refund. It was also very loud as the walls were paper thin. Won’t stay there again…

Unsafe property with no management support We stayed at Showboat the weekend of Father’s Day, June 2025. The hotel check in went quickly. I had made a reservation online for the water park package, high floor, ocean view but never received a email confirmation. I called reservations to confirm but was told there was no reservation. I made another reservation online and went to check in. Front desk said I had two rooms. They cancelled the second room. I asked about my water park passes and I was told I didn’t have any. Next day, went to buy tickets and I was told I had two tickets for Friday and Two for Saturday. This meant I lost two tickets I purchased because I was told I didn’t have them. I was told they would speak to their manager but I received no communication and no clue what was happening. Security was lacking. We had issues with a group of teenage girls harassing us and didn’t feel like it was handled well. Staff at the front acted unfazed and offered no deescalation or support. The only staffer that was helpful was a security guard named, Garcia. I was genuinely scared and felt uncomfortable at the resort. Garcia recommended we have our room switched to another tower. She escorted me to my room to get my belongings and my family and brought us to the other room. The room was on the 10th floor, about a 10 minute walk to the boardwalk. Not what I paid for. I was penalized for Showboat’s lack of security and order on their property. For such a large, youth centric facility, they had alarmingly few security guards posted and they did seem overwhelmed. The next morning, I went down to speak with front desk first thing to discuss the room I was moved to and the rate I paid. The manager didn’t even keep eye contact with me. She glanced at me and then just looked down at her computer and acted completely uninterested. The response was, I’ll issue a refund. No clue how much? No clue how she calculated this. She signaled the conversation was over by saying sorry for the inconvenience and continued working. I felt so dismissed and embarrassed like I did something wrong. I grabbed my family and got out of there within the hour. While the hotel is on the boardwalk, I wouldn’t return. The property is arcade and waterpark only. Knowing the lack of security and care at this property was alarming and I will never return to Showboat. If I am reserving a vacation location, I want to know my family is safe. This is not the case at Showboat. Today is the Monday after Father’s Day. Starting at 8:30am, I called the front desk to speak with the GM. I continued calling about every 30-1hr until 5pm. At no point throughout the day did anyone at the front desk answer the phone. The rooms are also very dated and frankly unsafe. The bed-frames are dated and not correctly aligned. I sliced the side of my ankle open on a metal piece that was sticking out about 5 inches from the mattress toward the foot of the bed. The air circulation/ac is not good. The rooms in both towers were very humid. Overall, I wouldn’t return to Showboat. Their rates aren’t significantly better than any other resort on the AC boardwalk. Perhaps because there isn’t gambling, they don’t feel they need much security. You get groups of kids roaming around your resort, unsupervised, doing whatever they want, barely challenged, you breed a dangerous situation waiting to happen. I visit AC with my family. If a property is dismissive when guests are looking for genuine help and their target demographic is children and families, would you really trust the safety of your children there? I will never return.
